DeKALB, Ill. - Northern Illinois senior Xavier Silas was named the Mid-American Conference West Division Player of the Week for the second straight week, the league office announced Monday.
In Northern Illinois' only game of the week, Silas tied his career high by scoring 34 points for the second consecutive game in the Huskies' 86-80 win at Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) last Wednesday. Silas' points came on 12-of-16 shooting as he established a new career high for field goals made in a game. He also tied his season high for rebounds with six and had his best game of the year in terms of assists (3) and steals (2) while playing 36 minutes.
Silas hit four-of-five three-pointers versus UMES and is now averaging 28.8 points and 5.5 rebounds per game to lead the Huskies in both categories. He is shooting at a 61 percent clip from the field and 56.6 percent from three. His 28.8 points per game average ranks second in the country; he leads the MAC in three-pointers made per game and is second in free throw percentage and three-point percentage.
Silas earned the MAC West Player of the Week honor for the second consecutive week and for the fourth time in his career. He also was named MAC West Player of the Week last Monday after scoring 22 and 34 points in games versus Bradley and Cardinal Stritch, respectively.
The Huskies picked up their second win, and first road win, of the season at Maryland Eastern Shore and entered Monday night's home game versus Boise State with a 2-2 record on the year.
Following Monday's contest, the Huskies will play Chicagoland foe DePaul at the Allstate Arena on Thursday night, Dec. 2 at 7:30 p.m.
