DeKalb, Ill. - The Northern Illinois men's basketball team knows that there is a battle waiting for them on Saturday afternoon, and the Huskies will come out swinging against defending Big South Champion Winthrop, in rematch of last year's classic double-overtime tilt in Rock Hill, South Carolina on Saturday afternoon (2 p.m.) at the NIU Convocation Center.
The Huskies (3-0) are currently off to their best start in 12 seasons, while the Eagles are 5-2 with their only losses coming against nationally-ranked North Carolina and Maryland.
THE COACHES --Rob Judson is in his sixth season at the helm of the NIU men's basketball team, and has a career-record of 70-78, including last season's Mid-American Conference West Division championship. Winthrop head coach Gregg Marshall is in his ninth year as the Eagles' skipper, and has a career-record of 170-80.
THE SERIES -- The series is tied at one with Winthrop squeaking past the Huskies, 98-97 in double-overtime in an ESPN BracketBuster contest on February 19, 2006 in their last meeting. Winthrop forward James Shuler led three Eagles' players with at least 20 points with a game-high 27 points. Shuler was followed by 24 points from Eagles' center Craig Bradshaw and 20 points from guard Torrell Martin. NIU senior forward Todd Peterson topped the Huskies with 21 points on the afternoon.
