NIU Men's Hoops, Number Two In College RPI And Number One In Strength Of Schedule

DeKalb, IL – The Northern Illinois University men’s hoops squad found itself ranked among the nation’s elite on Monday evening according to the 2006 College Basketball Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) as the Huskies are second in the nation for RPI, behind top-ranked Duke, and first overall in strength of schedule.

The Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) is the formula used by the NCAA to rate men’s and women’s college basketball teams. The RPI is calculated by adding three parts: team winning percentage (25%), average opponents’ winning percentage (50%) and average opponents’ opponents’ winning percentage (25%).

NIU (3-1) holds a record of 1-1 against teams ranked in the top 50 RPI with a 77-68 win over No. 46 DePaul University and an 87-51 defeat at the hands of No. 7 Missouri State University. Their RPI is currently .736, while their strength of schedule is .725.

The next five closest schools in the state of Illinois following the Huskies include the University of Illinois (No. 6), DePaul (No. 46), Loyola-Chicago (No. 51), Bradley University (No. 90) and Southern Illinois University (No. 150).

The Huskies will square off with Wright State University at 7:05 p.m. (CST) on Tuesday night at the NIU Convocation Center in a rematch of their ESPN Bracket Buster contest from last season.
