NORTHERN ILLINOIS FOOTBALL 2013
NIU vs. Akron – October 12, 2013
Huskie Stadium – DeKalb, Ill.

Akron Head Coach Terry Bowden

Opening Statement…

"I’d just like to commend Northern Illinois on the way their players play. They play so very hard and they’re well coached. They never give away a game. We about snuck in on that one. They don’t give games away. That’s why they have the record they have. I’m awful proud of our players and our coaches for the fine job they did. They came in here having been through a lot as a program. They came in here believing that they could win a football game. Every team we’ve played on our schedule was a bowl team and will be a bowl team. We haven’t had a week off yet. Our best wasn’t good enough today, but I told our players if you go out and play hard as you did today, wins will come. They’ve had a tough, tough road."

On Jordan Lynch’s play…

"He was getting big chunks that he usually does, but he doesn’t make mistakes/ He didn’t give us the game or give us a chance."

On what it’s like to prepare for Jordan Lynch…

"He reminds me of Tim Tebow because of his power. He doesn’t go to the ground. He runs between the tackles and he can also scramble. You’ve got to make sure you keep people inside for his running game as well as the passing game. I’ve watched a lot of film on him and I don’t even think he was at his best tonight. Sometimes things don’t go Northern Illinois’ way in the first half and they just come out and put it in his hands. Everybody has a lot of confidence in that. He’s awful good."

On how Akron was able to apply pressure to Northern Illinois in the passing game…

"I think we’ve got the second-best sack team in the conference. We’ve got a pretty good rush group out there. He (Jordan Lynch) gets rid of the ball so quick that you don’t get to him a lot. We had a good game plan and we have some good edge rushers."

On NIU DT Ken Bishop…

"I don’t think there’s a better defensive player in the league than No. 93 (Ken Bishop) for y’all. He’s the best. He’s a difference maker. He’s got incredible strength and explosion. Whether it’s against Iowa or us, he has the ability to stick a hand in somebody’s chest and just drive them back. Then he separates with great quickness. He’s got the whole package."

On whether or not Jordan Lynch is on his Heisman Trophy radar…

"I voted on that for the 10 years I was in broadcasting. I sure would. I’m in favor of not having just offensive players and not just having players from BCS conferences, It’s about which guys can lead their guys to championships and victories."

NIU Head Coach Rod Carey Press Quotes

On earning the win over Akron...

"It’s a good football team we just got done playing. We feel good we got the win and got out."

On why Ken Bishop’s is such a great defensive player...

"He’s quick and hard and he’s prepared. He’s got a good first step, plays with good leverage, uses his hands, and he’s usually in the right position. When you combine that with the ability and the knowledge and the prep, you get a good player like him."

On keeping the home winning streak alive...

"I’m really proud of that. It doesn’t matter how you get it, the streak is alive."

On what he has learned about the team...

"We’re playing good defense. You learn that our defense is a good defense and they have the ability to cary us, and tonight they did."

NIU Players

Jordan Lynch on his and the offense’s performance...

"I was out of rhythm and missing throws. A lot of credit goes to Akron’s defense. They played us well, and they’re fundamentally sound. I never got into a good rhythm throwing and making completions. It really comes down to us though. 1-of-15 on third downs is unacceptable. It’s not the coaches’ faults, it’s on us. We’re anxious to get back out there and make corrections in practice."

Jordan Lynch on teams’ preparations for games against NIU...

"I don’t think defenses have much of answer for all of us. There are tons of playmakers around me. They can’t just key in on me. We have (Cameron) Stingily in the backfield and (Da’Ron) Brown and (Tommylee) Lewis on the outside."

Cameron Stingily on the effect of the opposition focusing on Jordan Lynch...

"I don’t pay attention to any of that. I try do my best on each down, playing each one like it’s my last."

Tyler Wedel on kicking in place of Sims...

"Kicking takes a toll on the leg. The technique is different and it takes more mental preparation than punting."

Tyler Wedel on the two blocked kicks...

"The first one was a terrible kick. On the second, the kick felt good, so I’ll have to go back and look at the film of that one to get a better idea of what went wrong. I really just need to practice it more and get used to it."

Ken Bishop on the defense after the first quarter...

"We knew we had a challenge. All week, we knew Akron was going to challenge us by running the ball well and throwing the ball. We took it upon ourselves to do better for our team."
