NIU defeats Iowa, 30-27

NIU rallied for a 30-27 victory over Iowa Saturday.

High School: Three-time all-area and two-time honoree in all-state and all-conference. Three-year starter who set the Aurora Christian school record for most career tackles, tackles for loss and interceptions. Named the team captain of the 2012 Tri-Cities All-Area Team by the Daily Herald. Earned team MVP honors following the 2012 campaign. Rushed for 863 yards and seven touchdowns on 87 carries for Aurora Christian's state championship team in 2012. Caught 30 passes for 351 yards and three touchdowns in his senior season. Returned an interception 75 yards for the game-clinching score in ACS' 42-12 Class 3A state championship game win against Tolono Unity. Tied for the team high with 11 tackles, including 1.5 for loss in that game. Ran 12 times for 68 yards and a touchdown in the state title game. Added one catch for eight yards and a 70-yard kickoff return to set up the Eagles' first touchdown of the game. Registered 113 tackles, 47 solo, as a junior. Paced the ACS defense with 12 tackles and returned an interception 30 yards in the 2011 Class 3A state title game against Mt. Carmel. Carried 73 times for 858 yards and six scores in 2011. Also caught 10 passes for 230 yards and four touchdowns as a junior. Broke into the varsity starting lineup as a sophomore, where he compiled six catches for 250 yards and three scores.

Personal: Born May 22, 1995. Son of Willie and Sharron Mayes. Wants to major in business. Volunteers with his church and with the local youth baseball and football teams. Enjoys fishing, hunting and four-wheeling.
