10/25/2008 NIU 16, BGSU 13 - 10-25-08Mike Salerno kicked a 30-yard field goal to lift NIU to a 16-13 win over Bowling Green, Saturday, Oct. 25. 2008: Led NIU tailbacks in rushing with 510 yards on 110 carries. Had the team's top rushing total in three games: Western Michigan, Eastern Michigan and Miami (OH). Named team offensive skills player of the week three times (EMU, Miami, BGSU). Ran for more than 100 yards twice. Named team's freshman of the year. Set a career-high with 123 yards on 16 carries against the RedHawks (10-11). Also caught one pass for four yards and return two punts for 33 yards for a total of 160 all-purpose yards in that game. Ran 17 times for 111 yards, returned one kickoff for 17 yards, and scored the Huskies' opening touchdown on a 26-yard scamper at Eastern Michigan (9-27). Totaled 128 all-purpose yards against the Eagles, one of seven 100-plus all-purpose yard games. Rushed for 95 yards on 20 carries against Bowling Green (10-25). Opened the Western Michigan game (9-6) with a 26-yard touchdown burst on the game's first drive. Ran for 54 yards on 13 carries, caught one pass for 13 yards, and returned three kicks 38 yards to total 105 all-purpose yards against the Broncos. Tied an NIU record with 185 kickoff return yards, including a career record 44-yard return, at Ball State (11-5). Carried the ball at least once in all 13 games, and made one catch in five different contests. Had team-highs in kickoff returns (23), kickoff return yards (492), punt returns (nine), and punt return yards (71). High School: Member of the Mississippi All-Star Classic Team. Named the 2007 Class 4A Region 7 Most Valuable Player. As a senior, rushed for 1,331 yards, tallied 317 receiving yards and scored 20 touchdowns. Earned Mississippi Coaches Association second team All-State recognition as a junior, when he gained over 2,400 all-purpose yards and scored 18 touchdowns. Honored as the 2006 Class 5A Region 4 Player of the Year. Scored five career touchdowns on punt returns. Helped the Tigers go 12-2 and advance to the Mississippi Class 4A State semifinals, where the team lost in the final minute to eventual champion Laurel.
