Cullen Homolka begins his first season as a member of the Northern Illinois coaching staff as a graduate assistant for the Huskie defense, working specifically with the NIU defensive line.
Homolka comes to NIU after spending the 2011 season as defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator at the University of Charleston. Prior to his season with the Golden Eagles, he spent three years (2008-10) as a quality control assistant for Marshall University, where he helped coordinate recruiting and also served as the high school relations liaison for the Thundering Herd. Homolka was on staff of the 2009 Little Caesar's Pizza Bowl championship team.
Following graduation from KU, Homolka's first collegiate coaching position was with Washburn University in Topeka, Kan. He spent two years with the Ichabods, coaching the running backs in 2006 and the receivers in 2007. Homolka helped lead Washburn to an NCAA Division II Playoff appearance in 2007.
A fullback and special teams player for the Jayhawks from 2003-05, Homolka was a college teammate of NIU linebacker coach Kevin Kane during his three-year stay in Lawrence.
Homolka, who graduated from Kansas in 2006 with a degree in history, excelled in the classroom earning a spot on the Athletic Director's and Big 12 Honor Roll in 2003, 2004 and 2005. He is married to the former Kristin Ritter and has two children, son Trey (13) and daughter Abigail (11).
