Former Huskies Continue to Battle in Week Two of NFL Preseason

English becomes 10th Huskie in an NFL training camp in 2014

Two-time winner (2007 and 2008) of the Vern Smith Leadership Award, given to the MAC's top player, as voted on by league coaches. First defensive player to win the award twice. One of only two Huskies to be named first team All-MAC three times (2006, 2007, 2008). Set the NIU career records for tackles for loss (63) and quarterback sacks (31.5), forced eight fumbles and recovered four. Ranks fifth all-time in MAC history in quarterback sacks and is tied for eighth in tackles for loss. Played in 50 games and started 47 over the last five years, including every game from 2006-2008.

2008: Named league's Defensive Player of the Year by the MAC News Media Association and the Sporting News. The nation's active career leader in sacks (31.5), sack yardage (220) and tackles for loss yards (283), ranks second in tackles for loss (63). Leads the Huskies and ranked third in the MAC with eight sacks and 16 tackles for loss as a senior. Recorded at least one tackle for loss in 10 of 13 games this year and in 20 of his last 25 games as a Huskie. Collected 2.5 sacks for 26 yards at Tennessee and had three tackles for loss, forced a fumble on the Vols' nine-yard line, and was named the MAC West Defensive Player of the Week. 2007: Totaled 67 tackles, best among NIU defensive linemen. Was on the field for 98 percent (894 of 916) of the team's defensive plays during the year. Earned the MAC's Vern Smith Leadership Award (league MVP), becoming the second consecutive Huskie to do so, and was a consensus first team All-MAC choice. First defensive player to win the Smith Award since the first year of the award in 1982. Named to the Rotary Lombardi Award Watch List, the Bronko Nagurski Trophy Watch List and the Ted Hendricks Award Midseason Watch list. Collected the MAC West Defensive Player of the Week award and the FWAA/Bronko Nagurski Defensive Player of the Week award (9-22) after an NCAA-best five sack performance at Idaho (9-22). A consensus all-league pick and was named fourth team All-American by Phil Steele. Named the team's defensive MVP. Registered a team-best 17 tackles for loss, the third-highest total in NIU history, with 1.42 tackles for loss per game to rank 18th in the country. His 10.5 sacks led the MAC and ranked tied for 11th nationally as he averaged 0.88 sacks per game. Had a TFL in 10 of 12 games played. Also broke up a pair of passes. Made two solo tackles vs. Iowa (9-1). Recorded two tackles for loss, including one sack, and had seven tackles vs. Southern Illinois (9-8). 2005: Started nine of 11 games played. Totaled 78 tackles, tops among team's defensive linemen. Amassed seven tackles for loss, one sack, one fumble recovery and added nine quarterback pressures and four hurries. Had six tackles and two pressures at Michigan (9-3). Racked up 11 tackles, second highest on team, with one for loss, at Northwestern (9-10). Recorded seven tackles, including two for loss, with sack, two pressures and a fumble recovery vs. Tennessee Tech (9-17). Led team with 11 stops, including one for loss, against Akron (9-24). Tallied eight tackles, including one for loss, and had a hurry vs. Miami (10-5). Totaled seven tackles against Ball State (10-29). Made nine stops, two for loss, at Central Michigan (11-5). 2004: Made collegiate debut with four-tackle effort against Maryland (9-4). Missed final 11 games with injury and was granted medical redshirt.

High School: Named team co-captain and MVP, first team All-SCC, preseason Chicago Tribune league Player to Watch, first team Aurora Beacon-News All-Area, first team Daily Herald Tri-City All-Area, and honorable mention IHSFCA All-State as a senior. Totaled 98 tackles and six sacks from inside linebacker position and rushed for 312 yards on 38 carries (8.2 avg.) as a fullback. Named team MVP, first team All-SCC, first team Aurora Beacon-News All-Area, and first team Daily Herald Tri-City All-Area as a junior. Led Tri-City area with 100 tackles, and added two interceptions and two fumble recoveries during junior campaign. Earned three letters in football and basketball and one in track. Basketball standout and team captain, All-SCC, and All-Area as a junior. Threw discus in track as a freshman. Honor Roll student.

Personal: Born Jan. 22, 1986. Liberal Arts & Sciences major. Son of Susan and Larry English, Sr. Uncle, Charles Richardson, lettered as fullback at Wisconsin in 1972. Huskie Scholar earned a 3.0 GPA in the spring semester.
