***Today's victory marked the first career win for NIU Head Coach Rod Carey, who improves to 1-1 at NIU and all-time. It also marked the first career win at NIU for new Huskie Associate Vice President and Director of Athletics Sean Frazier and new NIU President Doug Baker.

***Northern Illinois senior kicker Mathew Sims recorded the third game-winning field goal of his career when he hit from 36 yards out with four seconds to play. Sims made a pair of game-winning threes in 2011 - the first to defeat Ball State at home (41-38) and the second to win the MAC Championship game over Ohio (23-20). Sims also hit a game-tying field goal a year ago in the MAC Championship game to send the game into double overtime.

***Sims made three field goals in the game and has a string of seven straight made field goals.

***Quarterback Jordan Lynch completed 25-of-41 passes for 275 yards and three touchdowns, and ran for 56 yards on 22 carries to total 331 yards of total offense on 63 plays. Lynch tied his career highs for both completions (25 vs. Toledo, 11-14-12) and attempts (vs. Florida State, Orange Bowl, 1-1-13). His 275 passing yards were the most by Lynch since the Toledo game last year and the third-highest total of his career.

***Northern Illinois is now 4-36 versus Big Ten teams all-time; three of NIU's wins have come in their last seven games versus the Big Ten. The Huskies' last B1G win came in 2010 at Minnesota.

***Northern Illinois claimed its first win over Iowa in nine tries to improve to 1-8 versus the Hawkeyes. NIU is 1-6 at Kinnick Stadium.

***NIU broke a 14-game losing streak in season opening games that it has played on the road. The last time the Huskies won a season-opener on the road was in 1983 (vs. Kansas).



***Northern Illinois won its season opener for the first time since 2011.

***NIU receiver Tommylee Lewis caught a pair of touchdown passes - of 40 and 21 yards - from QB Jordan Lynch to tie his career high for TD catches in a game. Lewis, who left the game early in the third quarter, finished with five catches for 82 yards.

***Cameron Stingily started his first career game at tailback for the Huskies and ran 12 times for 42 yards. Stingily came into the game with just one career carry and had just one carry in the first half.

***Dechane Durante intercepted his fifth career pass to record NIU's first INT of the season.

***Senior Jimmie Ward intercepted the pass that set up the Huskies' game-winning field goal with 1:24 to play. Ward, who made his fifth career INT, made the play with a cast on his left hand. He returned the ball to the 30-yard line. He also led the Huskies with 13 tackles, one off his career high of 14 (vs. Florida State in the Orange Bowl).

***Three true freshmen - Mycial Allen, Aregeros Turner and Austin Smaha - played in their first career games. Allen and Smaha played on special teams while Turner played on the Huskie offense and had one catch for three yards.

***After playing five games decided by a touchdown or less a year ago (with a 4-1 record in those games), NIU begins 2013 with a three-point contest.

***NIU receiver Da'Ron Brown caught a career best seven passes for a career high 92 yards, including a career-long 33-yard pass. Brown caught the game-tying pass (33 yards) from Lynch with 5:05 to play.

***Receiver Angelo Sebastiano also enjoyed a career day with five catches for 69 yards. He tied his 2012 season total for catches (5) and surpassed his yardage total (64) in one game.
