NORTHERN ILLINOIS FOOTBALL 2011
NIU vs. Army - September 3, 2011
Huskie Stadium - DeKalb, Illinois
Northern Illinois Notes
***Northern Illinois improves to 1-1 all-time against Army. The only previous meeting between the two schools came on Nov. 14, 1992, a 21-14 victory for the Black Knights.
***The victory was also NIU's first against a service academy. The Huskies are 0-2 all-time against Navy and have never met Air Force.
***Northern Illinois won its season opener for the first time since 2003 (a 20-13 upset win over No. 15 Maryland), breaking a seven-game losing streak in season openers. Today's game also marked the first time NIU had opened a season at Huskie Stadium since 2003
***With the win, Dave Doeren becomes the first NIU head coach to win his debut since Jerry Pettibone was victorious in his NIU debut in 1985.
***Sophomore Jimmie Ward blocked the fourth punt of his career in the first quarter. As a freshman in 2010, Ward had three punt blocks. He also earned his first career quarterback sack.
***Courtney Stephen scored his first career touchdown on the Ward block as he picked up the ball and returned it 16 yards for the Huskies' first score of the game.
***Tyler Wedel and Jason Meehan both saw action in their first collegiate game as true freshmen.
***19 players saw action for the first time in a Huskie uniform: Courtney Stephen, Jamal Womble, Dechane Durante, Jhony Faustin, Luke Eakes, Ryan Neir, Marckie Hayes, Gervaise Porter, Da'Ron Brown, Ryan Fillingim, Leighton Settle, Tyler Pitt, Jamaal Bass, Michael Santacaterina, Tim Semisch, C.J. Compher, Ryan Brown, Michael Gegner, Brian Mayer.
***FB Luke Eakes
first career catch also resulted in his first career touchdown. The redshirt freshman caught a 13-yard pass from Chandler Harnish
in the first quarter.
***CB Rashaan Melvin collected his third career interception.
***Nathan Palmer caught his 10th career touchdown pass on a 19-yard grab in the second quarter.
***Jasmin Hopkins gained a career best 138 yards on 14 carries to average 9.9 yards per rush. It was Hopkins' second career 100-yard game (2010, 104 yards on four carries versus Eastern Michigan).
***Running back Jamal Womble scored the first touchdown of his NIU career on a 58-yard screen pass from Chandler Harnish.
***Chandler Harnish threw a career high five touchdown passes Saturday. It was the most touchdown passes thrown by an NIU quarterback since Phil Horvath tossed six TDs versus Akron on Sept. 17, 2005. The NIU record for touchdown passes in a game is seven by George Bork versus UW Whitewater on Sept. 14, 1963.
***Harnish's five touchdown passes pushed him past Chris Finlen (1997-2001) into third place on the NIU all-time chart for TD passes. He now has 45 for his career to rank behind only George Bork (60) and Josh Haldi (55).
***Harnish also had one rushing touchdown. His six total touchdowns give him 59 for his career, two behind Josh Haldi for second-place in NIU history.
***Harnish had 195 passing yards in tonight's contest, giving him 5,923 passing yards in his career. Harnish is 92 yards behind Josh Haldi (6,015) for third-place in school history.
***NIU did not punt until the 12:35 mark of the fourth quarter and punted just twice in the game as Ryan Neir made his debut.
***Akeem Daniels six-yard touchdown reception in the second quarter was his first career receiving touchdown. Daniels had three rushing touchdowns last season.
***The Huskies converted 11-of-13 third downs.
