NORTHERN ILLINOIS FOOTBALL 2009 *** Jake Coffman, Brandon Bice, Eddie Adamski and Jason Onyebuagu served as captains for the Huskies. NIU Head Coach Jerry Kill does not name permanent captains but will rotate each game. ***True freshmen Perez Ashford and Martel Moore started the game at receiver for the Huskies. Other first time starters were Adam Kiel (RT) and Joe Pawlak (RG) on offense and Pat Schiller (MLB), Brian Lawson (DT) and Kiaree Daniels (CB). Also seeing their first career action were punter Josh Wilber, *** Me'co Brown recorded his career long 47-yard rush in the first quarter to set up the Huskie field goal. The sophomore finished the game with 64 yards on 11 carries despite not playing in the second half. ***Second career catch for Bryan Beckner in the second quarter and his first since 2007, put the Huskies in field position on the Wisconsin 20 yard line. ***Cory Hanson's second-quarter interception was the first interception by a Huskie defender since the seventh game of the 2008 season when Pat Schiller recorded a pick-off in the Toledo game. NIU did not intercept a pass in the last six games of the year.
***With two interceptions Saturday, NIU senior linebacker Cory Hanson now has five career interceptions, with at least one in each of his three previous seasons. ***NIU FB Kyle Skarb grabbed a 31-yard reception in the fourth quarter, the longest catch of his Huskie career. ***Chad Spann, who led NIU in rushing TDs a year ago, scored a pair of touchdowns on just nine carries and recovered the onside kick to give the Huskies a last-chance effort. ***Northern Illinois last recovered an onside kick last year versus Central Michigan when the Huskies pulled the trick twice. ***The Huskies dropped their season opener for the sixth straight year and fell to 1-32-1 all-time versus the Big Ten Conference. |
