Northern Illinois Post-Game Notes
Oct. 31, 2009
***NIU freshman nose guard Nabal Jefferson collected his first career quarterback sack in the second quarter. He finished the day with two tackles-for-loss for minus-nine yards.
***Northern Illinois recorded a shut out half for the first time since the Western Michigan game and shut out a team in the first half for the first time this season.
***Akron's 80-yard touchdown pass tied for the longest pass play against NIU this season. Wisconsin's Scott Tolzien and Isaac Anderson hooked up on an 80-yard touchdown in the season opener.
***Chad Spann scored two rushing touchdowns Saturday and now has 13 rushing TDs and 14 total scores on the year. Spann has six multiple touchdown games this season. His 13 rushing scores is the 10th-most rushing TDs in a season all-time at NIU. He has 21 career rushing touchdowns to rank ninth on the NIU all-time list for rushing scores.
***Spann went over the 100-yard rushing mark for the third time this season with 125 yards on 21 carries. It was his second consecutive 100-yard rushing game.
***Northern Illinois had two rushers go for over 100 yards for the first time since Oct. 2, 2004, when Garrett Wolfe (110) and Adrian Davis (104) each surpassed 100 yards versus Akron. In addition to Spann's 124 yards, Huskie quarterback DeMarcus Grady ran for 109 yards on 20 carries.
***Northern Illinois untied the series record against the Zips. The Huskies now lead the all-time series 6-5.
***Northern Illinois picked up its first Halloween victory in the major college era. The last time NIU won on Halloween was 1959, a 40-14 win over Illinois State.
***Rushing continued to be the key to victory in the Jerry Kill era. With 275 yards on the ground, the Huskies are now 11-0 under Kill when rushing for over 200 yards. The Huskies have now won 12 straight games when rushing for over 200 yards.
***Kicker Mike Salerno moved up to sixth on the Huskies' career chart for points scored by kicking. The senior has 147 points over the last two seasons (since transferring from Winona State) and needs six points to pass Brian Clark (1995-98) for fifth.
***Defensive end Brandon Bice forced his team-leading fourth fumble of the season.
***NIU scored 21 points in the fourth quarter and has scored 83 fourth-quarter points this year. That is 15 more points than in any other quarter this year.
***The Huskie defense did not allow Akron to convert a third down on Saturday, holding them to an 0-for-mark. It marks the first time in the Jerry Kill era that an opponent has not converted a third down.
