Northern Illinois Post-Game Notes
***Northern Illinois had not surrendered a sack in five games, since the Central Michigan contest, but the Cardinals got to Chandler Harnish for two sacks on Tuesday.
***Jared Volk made his first career start at guard for the Huskies. Volk was in the game due to an injury to starter Logan Pegram.
***Chandler Harnish broke the Northern Illinois school record for touchdown passes with a 15-yard throw to Martel Moore for NIU's first score. Harnish recorded his 61st career touchdown pass to claim sole possession of the NIU record. He entered the contest tied with Huskie great George Bork (1960-63) with 60.
***Northern Illinois fumbled twice in the game, the first time the Huskies have fumbled more than once in a game since the Kent State game. In that contest, NIU had three fumbles.
***Chandler Harnish went over the 100-yard mark in rushing for the fifth time this season, for the third consecutive game and for the 10th time in his career. He also became the Huskies' top rushing quarterback of all-time, surpassing Stacey Robinson, who gained 2,727 yards from 1988-90. Harnish moved into ninth place on the NIU all-time rushing list as he now has 2,807 career yards.
***Northern Illinois was penalized for 107 yards, its most penalty yardage on the season. NIU also had its highest penalty total of the season.
***NIU extends its Huskie Stadium win streak to 14 straight games, tying the venue record; the Huskies have won six-straight games this season.
***Chandler Harnish also broke the record for total offense in a game with his 519 yard total (338 passing, 181 rushing). It surpasses Phil Horvath's total of 477 yards recorded against Akron Sept. 24, 2005, a game in which he passed for 486 yards, a Northern Illinois record.
***Huskies Chandler Harnish and Jasmin Hopkins both rushed for over 100 yards in the contest, marking the first time since the Western Michigan game earlier this season (Oct. 15) that two NIU players rushed for 100 yards in the same game. Harnish totaled 181 yards, while Hopkins registered 122, the eight-highest combined total in school history. Harnish and Jordan Lynch recorded 229 yards and 113 yards, respectively, against Western Michigan Oct. 15.
***NIU wide receiver Martel Moore recorded 120 yards on six receptions, the second time this season he recorded 100 plus yards in a game and the fourth 100-yard receiving day by a Huskie this year. Moore made six catches (a career-high) for 130 yards (also a career-high) against Central Michigan Oct. 1, 2011.
***The Northern Illinois offense recorded 710 yards offense on 95 play (7.47 yards per play), the most by the Huskies this season, surpassing the total recorded against Western Michigan (Oct. 15) of 697. The Huskies set the school-record for total offense against Fresno State in 1990 with 806 yards gained.
***The Huskies set the school-record for most first downs in contest (43), set against Fresno State Oct. 6, 1990. NIU's highest-total this season was 33 against Cal Poly on Sept. 24. The NCAA record is 45. In the third quarter alone, Northern Illinois had 14 first downs.
***NIU ran 95 plays in the game, seven short of the Huskies' school record of 102 plays set in 1981 versus Ohio.
***Kicker Mathew Sims was a perfect 2-2 in field goals attempts, nailing the game-tying field goal (23 yards) with 2:46 left in the fourth quarter and the game-winner (34 yards) with eight seconds left. It was his fourth multiple field goal game of the season and his first since the Western Michigan contest (Oct. 15). Sims said "it was the first game-winning field goal of his career" in the postgame press conference.
***Mathew Sims broke the single-season record for most points scored kicking in a season with his 11-point total today and also broke the record for PAT's scored. Sims now has 107 points and 56 PAT's made this year, breaking Michael Cklamovski's records of 106 and 55, respectively.
***The NIU defense was stalwart on third-down, only allowing the Ball State offense to convert three times on 14 attempts. The Huskie defense also recovered two of the Cardinals four fumbles,
***Chandler Harnish accounted for three touchdowns in the game, two passing. He now has 32 touchdowns this season, one shy of George Bork's single season record of 33 in 1963.
***It was the sixth 300 yard passing game of Chandler Harnish's career with his 338 yard performance. It is the second-highest performance of his career.
