NIU Postgame Quotes

Head Coach Dave Doeren

Opening Statement
"First of all I thought Kent State a really played great game. I think both teams wanted that really bad. Both teams fought and when they jumped out to a lead and we fought back and the second half was back and forth and we had a great chance to put them away and they had a great 99 yard drive against our defense, which, nobody's done that. We had to resolve to battle back. We turned it over, they scored, and we just kept playing. Nobody flinched. Everybody believed. I think that's what we do. We've been in tough places before and I'm just really proud of the resolve and the leadership and the instinctiveness our team has. (Trophy placed on table) I'm glad that trophy's sitting in front of me - again. I don't have a lot of words, I'm pretty tired. "

On if the game was a good example of MAC play this year
"I love the term MACTION and the people using it because I think that's great. This conference, this year, there were eight or nine BCS wins, and we beat a team tonight that beat Rutgers at Rutgers when they were ranked in the top 20. It was a great season by our conference. There's a lot of really good coaches, there's a lot of players that are playing hard against teams and for us to go through the entire MAC schedule undefeated and beat this team in double overtime says a lot about our football team and I don't care where you play, the streaks that our team has right now says a lot about - there's a huge target on these guys backs every week and we're the best team people get to play because of the streaks we have it even adds to that incentive and with all that on the line they just keep winning. And it says a lot about their toughness."

On the defense's performance on third down
"It is tough when they have four downs and they keep going on fourth down. Early in the first half we had a tremendous job getting to the quarterback in the first half. I think they only had four first downs in the first half and fifty yards and to their credit they made some good adjustments at halftime and threw some slant balls on us that we didn't do a good job defending. Once we kind of got that under control it got a lot better. A fourth down stop is similar to a takeaway, defensively with field position so that's a big deal to get a turnover on downs without points as well. Any time we can do that and get the offense the ball back without losing field position on special teams is big."

On if NIU deserve to be in the top
"Absolutely. I don't know how many of you guys have watched us play week in and week out but there's not many teams in the top 16 that can play as consistent as these guys have. There's no ups and downs, they win every game they're supposed to win, and they've won the big games and it's different guys doing it, the quarterbacks are consistent, our defense is in the top 20. It's a totally three-face football team. Our kicker made a clutch kick tonight. You won't find another team in the top 16 that can say that."

Jordan Lynch, QB

On passing Denard Robinson for single season rushing by a quarterback
"All the credit goes to the offense and offensive play calling, it put us in the right situation and the offensive coaches and my teammates - without them, it's impossible."

On being a candidate for the Heisman
"All that stuff's great and I just think all that stuff is a banquet and I really don't want to talk about it today. It was a total team effort today and a victory - none of that stuff is possible if it wasn't for my teammates. I'm just so happy and proud of these guys. I'm just happy to be a MAC Champion."

Akeem Daniels, RB

On opening the run game in the second half
"I think the o-line did a great job blocking and creating holes for me and they was [sic] keyin in on Jordan a lot so I knew that would open up some holes and stuff for me. The wide receivers did a great job on the edge and if it wasn't for the great team effort - who knows what would have happened?"

Ken Bishop, DT

On the defense's performance
"I feel like our defense made big stops whenever we needed to and I feel like everyone just blown up especially the D line, we knew we had to win the game up front and first quarter all the way to overtime we dominated up front. We got two great ends coming off the edge and I feel like it was critical for the interior to be stopped.

On getting that final stop
"This is my first MAC Championship so knowing that defense was the one that pulled out that win at the end of the game - I think it's big."
