DeKALB, Ill. - Northern Illinois' 2007 football signing class includes something for everyone. Head Coach Joe Novak's 12th recruiting class features 19 players from seven different states who are listed at seven different positions. There are 18 freshmen, a junior college product, a heavy in-state and Chicago flavor, and players who come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. However, each of NIU's 2007 signees brings two common factors - talent and productivity.

The Huskies' 19 signees each bring a long list of accolades and impressive statistics with them to Northern as 14 players earned recognition on an all-state team during their prep careers and 17 picked up all-conference honors.

As usual on National Signing Day, Novak was pleased with his newest Huskies.

"Obviously I'm very pleased with this class," Novak said. "Our staff really did a great job. We recruited almost a complete football team with players at nearly every position, which we needed. I like the abilities of the kids and the character of the kids. They each fit into our program. We'll know in three or four years just how good of a class it is."

As usual, Novak and his staff concentrated their efforts in a recruiting area within a five-hour radius of DeKalb. The 10 Illinois players all hail from the Chicagoland area with three players from Indiana (although one of those played high school football in Chicago), two from Missouri and one each from Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin.

"We've always gone from St. Louis, to Minneapolis, to Western Michigan and into Indiana," Novak said. "We work within five hours of campus. Going to Kansas where we were able to fill a specific need with a junior college player. And, of course about half the class is out of the Chicago area, which is obviously very important to us."

By position, the class includes four offensive linemen and three players each at defensive back, quarterback, linebacker and defensive line. Two wide receivers and a running back round out NIU's 2007 group.

The Huskies made their second bowl appearance in the last three seasons in 2006 and finished with a 7-6 overall record. Northern Illinois will open 2007 spring drills on March 24 with the Spring Game scheduled for Saturday, April 21. The Huskies open the 2007 season on Sept. 1 at the "Soldier Field Showdown" when they play host to Big Ten foe Iowa at Soldier Field in Chicago.
