Freshman football player Adam Coleman recently took time after Spring Practice to talk to NIUHuskies.com. The 6-foot-3, 245-pound defensive lineman from Bettendorf, Iowa discussed topics ranging from his childhood dream of becoming a priest to his admiration for former Chicago Bears linebacker and pro football Hall of Famer Dick Butkus.
Why did you decide to come to NIU? The location, being close to home (Bettendorf, Iowa) and the coaches, especially (head) coach (Jerry) Kill. I'm also a business major and the business school here is highly respected.
What do you enjoy most about being an athlete at NIU? I really enjoy the camaraderie shared between all the football players. We all have similar interests and values.
What is the hardest part about being a student athlete? Time management is definitely the most important aspect of being a student-athlete. Between school work, lifting and practice, there's no time for procrastination.
If you could accomplish just one thing while at NIU, what would it be? Win the Mid-American Conference championship and play in a BCS game.
How do you prepare for a big game? I usually look over the plays a lot and really focus on what I have to do during the game. I try to be mentally ready for anything that could happen.
What is the best advice you've ever received from one of your coaches? Don't take playing college football for granted because it goes by fast and not too many people get this opportunity. Just enjoy every moment because the time is short.
Who is your all-time favorite football player? Dick Butkus.
What is your favorite meal? Steak and Potatoes.
What actor would play you in a movie about your life? Clint Eastwood.
If you could have a superhero power, what would it be? The ability to cure cancer.
What type of music would we find on your iPod?
When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? A priest.
What is your favorite class? Political Science.
What is your favorite activity outside of sports? I love spending time outdoors and fishing.
If you could have dinner with three people in history, who would you pick? George Washington, Michael Jordan and Dick Butkus.
What is the talent you'd most like to have? I'd really like to have a great singing voice.
What is your favorite TV show? Family Guy.
What is your favorite movie? The Replacements (football movie starring Keanu Reeves and Gene Hackman released in 2000).
What are the words you try to live by? Respect, hard work and dedication.
What is something few people know about you? I like to read.
