DEKALB, Ill. - Northern Illinois University offensive lineman Matt Krempel, who finished his Huskie career in 2013 with a 3.43 grade point average, has earned membership in the National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame's Hampshire Honor Society for 2014, the organization announced today.

Krempel is one of nine Mid-American Conference student-athletes named to the 2014 Hampshire Honor Society, an honor bestowed on senior college football players across all divisions who are starters or a significant reserve and maintain a GPA above 3.2. The NFF honored a record-setting 838 players from 267 schools this year.

A native of Columbus, Ind., Krempel earned his bachelor's degree in health sciences in 2012 and took graduate-level classes during the 2012 and 2013 season. Last season, he was pressed into a starting role at offensive tackle in the final five games of the season following an injury to starter Tyler Loos. Krempel was part of an offensive line that helped pave the way for Heisman Trophy Finalist Jordan Lynch as the Huskies won their fourth straight MAC West title.

Krempel, a product of Columbus North High School, is the second Huskie offensive lineman to gain membership to the Hampshire Honor Society, joining Joe Pawlak who qualified for a spot on the 2012 list. Krempel's selection marks the fifth-straight year a NIU football player has been named to the NFF Hampshire Honor Society.
