NIU in the NFL Draft

  • 33 Huskies have been selected in the NFL Draft since the event’s inception in 1936
  • The first NIU alum ever picked in the NFL Draft was DE Larry Brink, who was taken by the Los Angeles Rams in the 17th round (150th overall pick) of the 1948 draft. Three years later, Brink was a key member of the Rams’ 1951 NFL championship squad.
  • NIU’s most recent draftee was QB Chandler Harnish, who was taken with the final selection of the 2013 draft by the Indianapolis Colts, earning “Mr. Irrelevant” status
  • The most Huskies taken in one draft is three, which happened in 1973, 1976 and 1987
  • More NIU players have been drafted by the Indianapolis Colts – four – than any other NFL team, followed by the Tennessee Titans franchise (formerly the Houston Oilers) and the hometown Chicago Bears with three draftees each.
  • NIU has had eight defensive linemen and six offensive linemen chosen in the NFL Draft.  The only defensive back drafted out of NIU was cornerback Brett Tucker, an eighth round pick of the Houston Oilers in 1990.
