Huskies Hit 3.0 GPA Mark for Tenth Straight Semester
May 14, 2010
DeKALB, Ill. - Ten and counting. The Spring 2010 grades are in at Northern Illinois University and for the 10th straight semester - dating back to Fall 2005 - Huskie student-athletes have combined to post a cumulative grade point average above 3.0, NIU Senior Associate Athletic Director Francine St. Clair announced Friday.
The Huskies' Spring 2010 GPA came in at 3.016 as 10 of NIU's 16 programs (women's indoor and outdoor track are combined) hold cumulative averages above the 3.0 mark. Following the spring semester, 188 NIU student-athletes own a GPA of 3.0 or higher and 10 have a perfect 4.0.
"The student-athletes, coaches and staff at Northern Illinois take great pride in this 3.0 GPA streak," said NIU Associate Vice-President and Director of Athletics Jeff Compher. "It is a very visible result of our collective commitment to the academic success of our student-athletes. I want to especially congratulate Francine St. Clair and the staff of our Student-Athlete Academic Support Services unit, and recognize the support they receive from many individuals, departments and offices throughout the NIU campus. They all deserve to celebrate this accomplishment."
For the fourth straight semester, and the fifth time in the last six terms, the Northern Illinois volleyball team took top honors in cumulative grade point average as they came in with a 3.346 GPA. In terms of the semester grade point average, volleyball's 3.34 narrowly edged out women's soccer (3.33) and women's golf (3.31) with women's cross country (3.23), women's gymnastics (3.22) and softball (3.15) the next three on the term GPA list.
Those six teams also have the top cumulative GPAs with gymnastics (3.277) and cross country (3.272) coming in second and third on that list, followed by women's soccer (3.265), women's golf (3.194) and softball (3.170).
Northern Illinois' top men's team academically is golf as its 3.11 spring GPA contributed to a 3.160 cumulative mark. The Huskie women's tennis (3.097), women's track and field (3.072) and men's soccer (3.014) teams also own cumulative GPAs above 3.0 following the spring term. Even though spring is its competitive season, the NIU baseball team posted its highest cumulative grade point average in six semesters this spring, while football ranks third among Northern Illinois men's teams with its current 2.830 team GPA.
"It is quite an accomplishment for a group of 360 student-athletes, with all of the demands placed on their time from an athletic standpoint, to collectively achieve a 3.0 grade point average," St. Clair said. "Our student-athletes work hard in the classroom and have reached the point where they expect to meet this 3.0 standard each term."
Individually, 188 student-athletes own a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better following the spring semester and nine have achieved a perfect 4.0 GPA for their college career. The Huskie football team has 35 3.0 students, while women's track and field placed 22 individuals on the 3.0 list, followed by women's soccer (17), softball (14), gymnastics (13) and men's soccer (12).
The Huskies' 4.0 Scholar-Athletes include a pair of men's soccer players (Kyle Knotek, Michael Mascitti), three members of the women's track and field squad (Jenelle McCalla, Jenner Sio and Kaylee Walters), cross country/track and field standout Courtney Oldenburg as well as Sam Grams of volleyball, Paul Hammerschmidt from men's golf and Ryan Neir of the football team.
