DeKALB, Ill. - Northern Illinois University senior quarterback Jordan Lynch is one of 34 players named to the watch list for the 2013 Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award, the Davey O'Brien Foundation announced Wednesday.
In contrast to 2012, when Lynch came into the year as an unknown and made his first career start in the 2012 season opener versus Iowa, the Chicago, Ill. native has now been named to the preseason watch lists for three national awards - the Maxwell Award (college player of the year), the Paul Hornung Award (most versatile player) and the Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award.
The 34 quarterbacks on the O'Brien list were selected by a subset of the Davey O'Brien National Selection Committee based on their performances in 2012 and expectations heading into 2013. Lynch was joined by fellow Mid-American Conference QBs Tyler Tettleton (Ohio) and Keith Wenning (Ball State) on the O'Brien Watch List. Quarterbacks from every NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) school are eligible for the award until the field is narrowed to 16 semifinalists on Monday, Nov. 4. Three finalists will be announced on Monday, Nov. 25.
Lynch, the first FBS player to pass for more than 3,000 and rush for more than 1,500 yards in a single season, led Northern Illinois to a school-record 12 wins in 2012. The Huskies defeated Kent State, 44-37, in double overtime, to win their second consecutive MAC crown, and became the first league team to earn a spot in a Bowl Championship Series (BCS) bowl game with their appearance in the Discover Orange Bowl.
A product of Mt. Carmel High School, Lynch led the country in 100-yard rushing games with 12 to rank fourth in the nation in rushing. He broke the NCAA FBS record for rushing yards by a quarterback with 1,815 and scored 19 rushing touchdowns. Lynch completed 61 percent (256-of-420) of his passes for 3,317 yards with 25 touchdowns and six interceptions.
He was named a second-team All-American by the Associated Press and won the Vern Smith Leadership Award presented to the league's Most Valuable Player, as selected by MAC coaches and was the MAC Offensive Player of the Year.
Northern Illinois has launched a Heisman Trophy campaign for Lynch at www.JordanLynchfor6.com, with a Twitter account (@Lynchfor6), Facebook page Jordan Lynch for 6) and more. Lynch finished seventh in the Heisman Trophy voting a year ago, based on a low-budget informational effort that began after he accounted for 410 yards of total offense and six touchdowns on 50 plays in a 48-34 win over Western Michigan on Oct. 27.
Lynch is one of four Huskie players named to six national watch lists so far this preseason. NIU wide receiver/returner Tommylee Lewis was named to the Paul Hornung Award Watch List, safety Jimmie Ward earned a spot on the Jim Thorpe Award (best defensive back) preseason list and kicker Mathew Sims is on the Lou Groza Award listing.
