Carey enters his first full season as NIU head coach with five starters back on defense and eight starters returning on offense, led by 2013 Heisman Trophy candidate Jordan Lynch and the entire offensive line. The Huskie secondary features three players who started at least six games a year ago in cornerback Marlon Moore (Mobile, Ala./C.F. Vigor HS) and safeties Dechane Durante (Charlotte, N.C./Vance HS) and 2012 leading tackler Jimmie Ward (Mobile, Ala./Davidson HS). Lynch, Ward and offensive tackle Tyler Loos(Sterling, Ill./Sterling HS) all earned All Mid-American Conference honors in 2012.
Northern Illinois has launched a Heisman Trophy campaign for Lynch at www.JordanLynchfor6.com, with a Twitter account (@Lynchfor6), Facebook page Jordan Lynchfor 6), web series ("Lunch with Lynch") and more. The Chicago native (Mt. Carmel HS) finished seventh in the Heisman Trophy voting a year ago, and earned second team All-America honors from the Associated Press after breaking the NCAA record for rushing yards by a quarterback with 1,815 yards and becoming the first quarterback in NCAA history to gain 3,000-plus yards passing and more than 1,500 yards rushing.
Lynch has been named to the preseason watch list for the Walter Camp Player of the Year, Maxwell (college player of the year), Davey O'Brien National Quarterback (top quarterback), and Manning (top quarterback) awards, as well as the Paul Hornung Award (most versatile player). He is one of four Huskie players named to seven national watch lists so far this preseason. NIU wide receiver/returner Tommylee Lewis (Riviera Beach, Fla./W.T. Dwyer HS) joined Lynch on the Paul Hornung Award Watch List, while Ward earned a spot on the Jim Thorpe Award (best defensive back) preseason list and Mathew Sims (Hannibal, Mo./Hannibal HS) is on the Lou Groza Award (best kicker) radar.
