DeKALB, Ill. - Northern Illinois sophomore tailback Me'co Brown was named the Mid-American Conference West Division Offensive Player of the Week Monday after rushing for a career-high 150 yards in 26 carries in the Huskies' 28-21 upset victory over Purdue.
Brown, who leads the MAC and ranks 14th nationally in rushing with 110.3 yards per game, earned the honor for the first time in his career. He led a Northern Illinois rushing attack that gained 280 yards as part of a 454-yard night for the Huskie offense.
The Moss Point, Miss. native put the Huskies ahead to stay when he broke free on a career-long 67-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, marking his second consecutive game with a rush of 60 yards or longer. He is averaging 6.5 yards per carry this year.
"Me'co played well," said NIU Head Coach Jerry Kill. "He moved his feet, saw the holes and I was really pleased that he made a couple of big blocks."
Brown also caught two passes for 22 yards versus Purdue to total a season-high 172 all-purpose yards.
With the win over Purdue, NIU's first over a Big Ten Conference team since 1998 and second all-time in 35 games versus league schools, the Huskies improved to 2-1 on the season.
Northern Illinois concludes the non-conference portion of its 2009 schedule this Saturday when it plays host to Idaho at Huskie Stadium with kickoff at 2:30 p.m. (Central). The contest is the 1,000th intercollegiate game in NIU history and rally towels will be distributed to the first 5,000 fans.
Single game tickets are on sale for $20 for the general public, and $15 for senior citizens (62 and older), youth (18 and younger) and NIU student guests. Three-game season ticket mini-plans are also still available where fans pick any three of the five remaining home games for just $50 and will sit in the same seats for all three contests.
