DeKALB, Ill. – Northern Illinois junior offensive lineman Adam Kiel joined a select group of college football players on Tuesday as he was one of just 22 individuals across the country named to the 2010 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® by the Allstate Insurance Company and the American Football Coaches Association.
Kiel is the second NIU player all-time, and the second in the last three seasons, to be named to the prestigious team, which honors individuals who have shown outstanding commitment to service and volunteerism. Only 11 players from NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision teams were honored; they were joined by 11 players from all other divisions of college football to make up this year’s team. The 22-man team was selected from a record group of 112 players nominated in 2010.
Kiel adds his name to the Good Works Team list next to that of former NIU receiver Matt Simon, a member of the 2008 squad who went on to play professionally with the New Orleans Saints.
“This is a tremendous honor for Adam, and I’m very proud that he is the second player we’ve had in the last three years named to this team,” said NIU Head Coach Jerry Kill. “That tells me we are recruiting good kids that want to be a part of and contribute positively to the community. We are very proud of Adam and what he has done, stepping up in this area and taking a leadership role in terms of community service.
“This is not only an award for Adam and for our football program, but it is shared by our entire athletic department and all the student-athletes and coaches here who do such great work in this area.”
Kiel not only participated in more than 10 different activities in the community over the past year, he also helped coordinated many community service projects for the Huskie football team, ensuring that the team was represented at every event and encouraging his teammates to sign up for activities. He was directly involved in a number of events, including the “College to Careers” program at Rockford Environmental Science Academy, which involved speaking to a group of eighth-graders from the school and then hosting the students when they visited NIU on April 15. He also was involved with school “fun fairs,” Boy Scout Sports Day at NIU, a middle school walk-a-thon and NIU Little Siblings Day. He was elected vice-president of Northern Illinois’ Student-Athlete Advisory Committee for 2010-11.
On the field, the Wentzville, Mo. native started 10 games on the offensive line for the Huskies a year ago and currently serves as one of the top reserves on the NIU line. An accountancy major, Kiel carries a 3.328 grade point average.
He is one of two Mid-American Conference players named to the 2010 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® as he was joined on the team by Temple linebacker Amara Kamara. Kiel is also one of two players from Illinois FBS schools on the squad along with Northwestern defensive lineman Corbin Bryant.
