DEKALB, Ill. - Northern Illinois University quarterback Jordan Lynch and wide receiver and return specialist Tommylee Lewis earned Mid-American Conference West Division Player of the Week honors after their play in NIU's 55-24 win at Purdue, the league office announced Monday.
Lynch earned his second straight MAC West Offensive Player of the Week honor and third of the season after helping lead the Huskies to a dominating performance at Purdue as NIU became the first Mid-American Conference team to win two games over Big Ten opponents in the regular season and scored the most points ever by a MAC team in a Big Ten game. He finished with 207 passing yards while completing 18-of-25 passes with three touchdowns and no interceptions.
A native of Chicago, Ill., Lynch also gained 35 yards on the ground with a touchdown on nine carries. The Mt. Lynch started the game 14-of-15 passing and completed 11 straight passes from midway through the first quarter to 5:40 of the second period as he played a large part in NIU's 27-10 halftime lead. Lynch completed passes to eight different receivers in the game.
Lynch also earned league player of the week following his performances against Iowa and Eastern Illinois this season and has seven for his career.
Lewis, a native of Riviera Beach, Fla., picked up his second league honor of the season earning MAC West Special Teams Player of the Week for his performance against the Boilermakers. Lewis, who earned MAC Offensive Player of the Week honors following his play at Idaho, opened the second half of NIU's 55-24 win at Purdue by bringing the kickoff back 99 yards for a touchdown, extending the Huskies' lead to 34-10 just one play into the half. Lewis' kickoff return touchdown was the fourth of his NIU career, extending his school record mark.
On the day, Lewis returned three kickoffs for 146 yards as Purdue kicked away from the junior following his touchdown return. He also had one punt return for 12 yards, a four-yard rush and three pass receptions for 19 yards to lead NIU in all-purpose yards with 181 in the game.
Defensive tackle Ken Bishop (Lauderhill, Fla./Piper) and Mathew Sims (Hannibal, Mo./Hannibal) join Lynch and Lewis as Northern Illinois' MAC POTW honorees this season. Bishop earned Defensive Player of The Week accolades for his performance in NIU's 45-35 victory at Idaho, while Sims earned MAC West Special Teams Player of the Week honors after kicking the game-winning field goal in NIU's 30-27 victory over Iowa in the season opener.
