Huskie Football Weekly News Wrap Up

DeKALB, Ill. - Northern Illinois news and notes from the week heading into Saturday's full day of action on the NIU campus. Saturday Schedule Includes Basketball, Soccer, Bashing The NIU men's basketball team, which opens its 2008 season with an exhibition game versus Freed Hardeman on Sunday, Nov. 2, will hold an open practice Saturday morning from 9 a.m. to Noon in the Convocation Center. Practice will be held in Victor E. Court and all are welcome. At 11:45 a.m., fans are invited to join President John Peters, Associate Vice President and Director of Athletics Jeff Compher and members of the Huskie men's and women's soccer and women's track and field teams for the official dedication of Northern Illinois' new Soccer and Track & Field Complex. The brief ceremony will take place at midfield of the new soccer surface and will be followed immediately by the Huskie men's soccer game versus Bowling Green at Noon. Admission to the match is free. Prior to the football kickoff, on the east side of Huskie Stadium, NIU's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee will hold a "Bash the Car" fundraiser where fans can make a donation and help participate in the destruction of an automobile. Kill for the Cure Kill is joining with 2,765 coaches at 204 colleges and universities across the country to raise awareness, signify support and draw attention to the need for funding and research for the disease, which is the most common fatal genetic disorder diagnosed during childhood. November Television Schedule Shaping Up The Mid-American Conference announced that Northern Illinois' game at Ball State on Wednesday, Nov. 5 will be broadcast on ESPN2 beginning at 7 p.m. (CST), giving the Huskies' at least two ESPN2 showings in November. NIU's home game versus Navy on Tuesday, Nov. 25 is also scheduled to air on ESPN2 with kickoff in Huskie Stadium at 6 p.m. (CST). Ten of Northern Illinois' 12 games in 2008 will be televised; each of the past six contests also has been available to a nationwide audience through the ESPN GamePlan package. The MAC will announce the broadcasting network for Northern Illinois' Nov. 12 home game versus Central Michigan next week. That Wednesday night game is scheduled to kick off at 7 p.m. NIU Linebacker Honored by the MAC Kube, the second NIU defender honored in 2008, made a season-best six tackles, four solo, while recording one of the biggest defensive plays on the day for NIU with a second-quarter sack of Toledo quarterback Aaron Opelt. With the Huskies holding a 14-0 lead and the Rockets facing third-and-six from the NIU 16, Kube sacked Opelt for a 13-yard loss to the 29. Toledo missed the field goal try and Northern Illinois went on to extend its lead to 21-0. The sophomore, who made his first start at linebacker, ranks fourth on the Huskie team with 29 tackles. -- NIU -- |
