Following its 44-37 double overtime victory against No. 17 Kent State in the biggest Mid-American Conference Championship game in conference history, the Northern Illinois Huskies earned a No. 15 spot in the Bowl Championship Series ranking and was selected to take on Florida State in the 2013 Discover Orange Bowl. NIU is the first MAC team to earn a Bowl Championship Series berth since the system was created in 1998.
