Accomplishments
Led Southern Illinois to five straight appearances in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS, formerly I-AA) playoffs, including a semifinal berth in 2007.
Compiled a career record of 104-57 (.646 winning percentage) in 14 seasons as a collegiate head coach, including a mark of 55-32 (.632) at SIU from 2001-07.
Southern Illinois has been ranked in the Top 20 (FCS Coaches Poll or Sports Network Media) for 64 straight weeks, dating back to Sept. 8, 2003 and has been in the Top 10 for 12 consecutive weeks in 2007.
Won three straight Gateway Football Conference Championships (2004, 2005, 2006).
Coached five first-team All-Americans and four Walter Payton Award finalists; four of his former players, including N.Y. Giants tailback Brandon Jacobs and Baltimore Ravens linebacker Bart Scott, are currently on NFL rosters.
His 2004 team was ranked No. 1 in the country (FCS) for 10 consecutive weeks and entered the playoffs with the No. 1 national seed.
The Salukis posted wins over FBS teams Indiana (35-28) in 2006 and Northern Illinois (34-31) in 2007.
SIU earned the Gateway Football Conference All-Academic Award, given to the football program with the best overall cumulative GPA, in both 2004-05 and 2005-06.
Helped SIU to a 50-14 record over the last five seasons, putting SIU among the top NINE FBS AND FCS schools in wins during that time.
Named the Eddie Robinson National Coach of the Year in 2004.
Teams he has coached (as assistant or head coach) have made 12 appearances in the playoffs (NAIA or NCAA), reached the semifinals in 2007 (with SIU) and won the Division II National Championship in 1991as offensive coordinator at Pittsburg State.
