The NLI List Is Complete For Today But NIUHuskies.com Is Not Done Yet
By Zach Peters | Posted at 4:51 pm on Wednesday, February 2, 2011
Although the signings and press conference are complete for today, NIUHuskies.com is not done providing coverage. If you missed the press conference or haven't checked out any highlight videos of the recruits, they are available on Huskie All-Access. Also, keep checking Signing Day Central for further updates as quotes from the press conference, including Coach Doeren's breakdown of each player, and the official press release will both be added.

A View Of The Snow Across From The Convocation Center
By Zach Peters | Posted at 2:29 pm on Wednesday, February 2, 2011
As I was driving to and from the office at the Convocation Center to get some materials for the press conference I stopped to take a snapshot of the field across from our offices. In the middle-top of the picture is a soccer goal. Only about two feet of it is showing, and most soccer goals are nearly eight feet tall. You can do the math on the amount of snow that is covering the fields where a lot of the NIU intramural sports are played.

Parking will also be free as fans should park in Convocation Center lot C-2, which is immediately southeast of the arena. As I mentioned earlier, Coach Doeren will be at the Sixth Man Grill, located across from Victor E. Court, at 6:15 p.m. to talk with fans about the new recruits. The final addition to the day is a walk-on tight end named Kevin Tennenbaum. He's a 6-5, 225-pounder from Buffalo Grove High School in Buffalo Grove, Ill. who has 10 career catches for 111 yards and one touchdown. All information on the signing day roster is complete, but we are just waiting on some possible video highlights of Tennenbaum. Stay tuned for that. Otherwise, the class is complete: 22 NLIs from eight different states, 11 defensive players, 10 offensive and one special teamer. Three are JUCO transfers, the other 19 will be incoming freshmen.

I just received confirmation that Coach Doeren will still be discussing the signing class at a pregame reception before tonight's 7 p.m. NIU-Bowling Green men's basketball game at the NIU Convocation Center. The reception will be held at the Sixth Man Grill, located across from Victor E. Free coffee, hot chocolate and popcorn will be served as well. Be sure not to miss this great opportunity to discuss the future of Huskie football with Coach Doeren!
Doeren Signs Impressive Linebacker from Missouri in Videl Nelson
By Zach Peters | Posted at 12:33 pm on Wednesday, February 2, 2011
Another NLI came through the wire moments ago. This one from Videl Nelson of Staley H.S. in Kansas City, Mo. Nelson is a 6-2, 215-pound athletic outside linebacker with shear tackling ability who runs a 4.51 forty-yard dash. In 2010, he totaled 178 tackles and 16.5 sacks for -100 yards. As a junior, he had 82 tackles and five sacks. Look for more updates on Nelson in the near future.
Huskies Still Hungry For More
By Zach Peters | Posted at 12:08 pm on Wednesday, February 2, 2011
Coach Doeren stopped by once again to tell me the staff is still working on getting additions to the class before the day is done. He also informed me that the staff who did not sleep over at the Yordon Center had to hang out just down the road at IHOP from about 5:30 - 8:30 a.m. He said they ate plenty of pancakes and drank plenty of coffee while waiting for a path to be cleared.
NIU Adds Small, Shifty Sunshine State Wide Receiver In Tommy Lee Lewis
By Zach Peters | Posted at 11:52 am on Wednesday, February 2, 2011
Just spoke with defensive line coach Ryan Nielsen, one of a few coaches who slept at the Yordon Center last night, who gave us some additional info on DeVonte' Majors and Matt McIntosh. Be sure to check the signing day roster page for updates to their bios.
Coach Nielsen also informed me that the Huskies have a new committment: Tommy Lee Lewis, a 5-8, 170-pound wide receiver from Riviera Beach, Fla. (W.T. Dwyer H.S.). Lewis helped Dwyer get to the 2010 Class 4A semifinals and go 10-0 in conference play. He posted 44 catches for 792 yards and 12 touchdowns and had a 95-yard kick return for a touchdown. A four-year varsity letterwinner and two-time team captain, Lewis admires Kansas City Chiefs all-around offensive threat Dexter McCluster and tries to play just like him -- small and explosive. Look for his full bio and video highlights to be up on the signig day roster page shortly.
Update From Coach Doeren
By Zach Peters | Posted at 11:22 am on Wednesday, February 2, 2011
Coach Doeren just stopped by the NIU Media Relations Camp in the Defensive Meeting Room of the Yordon Center with an update and another potential signee. Check the signing day roster soon for additions to the class.
View From The Yordon Center
By Zach Peters | Posted at 11:06 am on Wednesday, February 2, 2011
I just made it on to campus a bit ago and here's the scene from the cozy interior of the lovely Yordon Center. As you can see, there is plenty of snow. As I walked through the doors and upstairs to the football offices, I found the football staff hard at work reviewing film of recruits in the conference room. As the hits and misses of signing day go on, first-year head coach Dave Doeren and Co. are still looking to add pieces.
First Signees Are In
By Donna Turner | Posted at 9:05 am on Wednesday, February 2, 2011
Good morning Huskie Fans! Hope everyone made it through "Blizzard 2011" OK and doesn't have to dig out of too much snow to get going again. We at NIUHuskies.com are up and at `em and the weather has not stopped the faxes from rolling in at the Yordon Center.
The weather has caused some changes to our processes, though. To give you a hint of how those go, before the signees can be announced here on the blog or posted on the site, the NLI's must be certified by NIU Assistant Athletic Director Lindsey Hicks. She checks that all the proper signatures and dates are on the NLI's and that they are filled out correctly. Lindsey's original plan was to be at the Yordon Center by 5:50 this morning, in time to catch the first fax, which could be received as early as 6 am (Central) from our Eastern Time Zone signees. Well, the blizzard changed that as she could not get out of her driveway.
Instead, the faxes are now being received at the Yordon Center, scanned and e-mail to Lindsey, who pulls them up on her laptop, checks them out and sends approvals to her routing list.
We are starting off by posting our January enrollees - running backs Leighton Settle and Jamal Womble, and safety Tre' Moore. They should be coming pretty quickly in groups after this so keep reading!

While Signing Day doesn't officially start until tomorrow, the blog start now! Despite the "inclement weather" (read: boat loads of snow and winds of 50 mph), we will push through. National Letters of Intent are now slowed by snow nor rain nor heat nor darkness. You can count on the fine folks here at NIUHuskies.com to be there as every letter comes in, providing highlights, bios and coaches' comments on every signee that committs to Northern Illinois University. Stay tuned here, starting early tomorrow morning for all the official news as it comes!
