A veteran of the collegiate coaching profession and a four-year letterwinner at Hastings (NE) College, Chuck Scheinost enters his second season as an assistant coach for John Cleary and the NIU men's golf program. Scheinost's rookie season with the Huskies proved to be a successful one, as he helped tutor Nick Schenk to an All Mid-American Conference selection and Zach Jecklin to the MAC All-Tournament team, en route to NIU's sixth-place finish at the season-ending tourney, their highest finish in nine years. A four-year starter on the collegiate level, Scheinost proved to be much more than a standout on the links, earning Academic All-America recognition during the 2002-03 season, while serving as a student athletic trainer for the football and basketball programs during his junior and senior campaigns. A media production major, with a minor in athletic training/coaching, Scheinost earned a pair of Golden Leaf Awards from the Nebraska Collegiate Media Association for Best Television News Feature and Best Television Sports Reporting. The Fort Collins, Colorado, native also earned two Golden Leaf Awards in 2001 as well. "Chuck Scheinost brings a strong background both as a player and as a coach, and has the ability to help our program in a variety of ways with his athletic training and video production experience," Cleary said. "He knows what it takes to be a successful student-athlete and has exhibited that both in the classroom and in competition." Prior to his arrival in DeKalb, Scheinost spent one year as an assistant coach at Lenoir-Rhyne College, tutoring both the men's and women's programs. In that one season, Scheinost tutored five All-South Atlantic Conference performers (four women, one man) and helped seven others achieve Academic All-League recognition. Involved in the coaching, recruiting and strength and conditioning aspects for the Bears, Scheinost also served as tournament director for both the Billy Joe Patton and Lady Bear invitationals, while assisting in the organization of three other events. However, it's not just at the collegiate level where Scheinost has built his coaching resume. The assistant director of the Payne Stewart Memorial / First Tee of the Ozarks at Kids Across America Camps during Summer 2005, the 24-year-old aided with the planning and development of various golf activities geared toward promoting the game of golf to inner-city youth. He also served as a volunteer coach for the Northern Colorado Junior Golf Tour in Fort Collins, arranging tournaments for boys and girls aged 12-18. Prior to his coaching exploits, Scheinost recording three runner-up marks and numerous top-10 finishes over his tenure at Hastings. |
