CHANDLER, Ariz. - The Northern Illinois men's golf team secured a tie for sixth in their first tournament of the spring, the WSU Snowman Getaway.

The Huskies turned in a 295 as a team in the third and final round Tuesday, pulling into a tie with Portland. NIU led all teams with 180 pars to their credit, which went a long way towards the team's final score of 882. The tie for sixth also netted the Huskies their fifth top-10 finish in their last six events.

"We really enjoyed the event and it was a real good golf course," second-year NIU head coach Tom Porten said. "Washington State was a good host. I felt like we got a lot accomplished out here. It's not anywhere near golf weather in DeKalb, so anytime you can go south or west and compete and come out with more wins than losses that's good."

Redshirt senior Andrew Frame (Manteno, Ill./Manteno HS) was nearly as hot as the Arizona sun, posting NIU's low tally with a one-under 71. The score moved him up six places on the leaderboard into a tie for 17th. Frame's final round was his lowest to close a tournament since the 2009 Boilermaker Invitational, and helped him to his 14th career top-20 finish.

"Andrew played really well today," Porten said. "He was a couple rolls away from a round in the 60s."

Although senior Jeff Dick (Sherman, Texas/Sherman HS) fell just short of his seventh career top-10, he did secure his fifth straight top-20 performance today. The senior signed for a 74, good enough to finish at even par for the tournament and tie for 12th.

"Jeff hit one out of bounds on the eighth hole, which led to a double bogey," Porten said. "He hadn't been over par the whole tournament. But he made two birdies late in his round to help us. I know he's disappointed he didn't hold a top-10 spot, but I like the way he didn't give in and came back to help us at the end."

Sophomore Bryce Emory (Aurora, Ill./Marmion Academy) fired a 74 today, moving him up a couple positions into a tie for 29th. The finish represents Emory's second-best effort to date, behind only his tie for 27th at this past fall's D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate.

Freshman Shawn Foley (Pewaukee, Wis./Waukesha North) posted a 76, good enough to secure a tie for 45th. Senior Tim Kay (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett HS) rounded out NIU's lineup with a tie for 60th in the field of 80.

"We have a lot of work to do with our short game over the next few weeks before we head to Florida for spring break," Porten said. "We learned a lot about each of the players."

The Huskies return to action March 14 in Orlando, Florida for the UCF Rio Pinar Invitational. The stop will be the first of two events in the Sunshine State, which together make up a Huskies' version of the PGA Tour's annual Florida swing.
