MURRELLS INLET, S.C. – Junior Liam White (Waukegan, Ill./Carmel Catholic/Indian Hills CC) carded a team-best 76 on the final day of the General Hackler Championship as the Northern Illinois University men’s golf team concluded the tournament with a 12th-place finish.

Freshmen Caulen Coe (Gulf Stream, Fla./University of Nebraska Independent School) led the Huskies in the 54-hole event, finished with a three-round total of 237, tied for 52nd overall. Kent State’s Corey Conners and Coastal Carolina’s Andrew Dorn each carded even-par totals of 216 to lead the field, Middle Tennessee State won the team competition with a total of 884.

“We have a young team with lots of inexperience that gets exposed on and around the greens,” said NIU head coach Tom Porten. “We have taken steps forward and we are on the green with regularity now, but it doesn’t show up in the scoreboard because we just have struggled on the green.

White carded 14 pars on his round with a pair of birdies; the lone significant blemish on his card was a triple bogey on the 11th hole, his 15th hole of the day.

“Liam played 17 quality holes,” said Porten. “He just made one mistake that cost him, but he came back and played his last three in one-under to finish with a 76, so that was encouraging.”

“We have come out in the first two tournaments and if you just looked at our fairways in regulation and our greens in regulation you would think that we were much further along,” said Porten. “Our long statistics are right up there with the leaders in the tournament, but when you look at the short game the difference is staggering. The moral of the story is that if you can’t chip and putt, you can’t score and that is what you have seen from us in the first two tournaments (of the spring).”

Following a week of practice while on spring break, the Huskies will return to action next Sunday and Monday, March 16-17, at the Talis Park Challenge in Naples, Fla.
