PINEHURST, N.C. - Northern Illinois men's golf freshman Griffin Bauman helped the Huskies advance to eighth place at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate when he shaved off eight strokes from his opening round score to finish two under par during second round action at the Centennial Pinehurst No. 8 in Pinehurst, N.C., Saturday. After 36 holes of play NIU is tied for ninth place with a score of 599 points.

The Huskies entered the second day of competition in tenth place, before improving by three strokes during the second round to total 599 (301, 298). Penn State sits in first place with a score of 580.

"I am really pleased with the team's performance," NIU head men's golf coach Tom Porten said. "We played really solid as a team today. We keep making steady progress each round and we are very much looking forward to tomorrow's final round of competition."

Individually, both Bauman (Crystal Lake, Ill./Central) and Jeff Dick (Sherman, Texas/Sherman) rank among the top-20 performers at the event. After improving his finish by eight strokes in the second round, Bauman is tied for 20th with a 148 (78, 70, +4). Dick sits tied for 16th with a score of 147 (73, 74, +3).

"Griffin did a great job today," said Porten. "He got off to a fast start and kept it going all day long. He really had a good bounce back from yesterday's competition."

Senior Matt Triplett (St. Charles, Ill./East) stands in a tie for 26th with a 149 (72, 77, +5). Rounding out the Huskie line up is freshman Paul Hammerschmidt (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville Central) who ranks 61st with a 155 (78, 77, +11) and freshman Kurtis Luedtke (Aurora, Ill./West) who is tied for 77th with a 159 (79, 80, +15).

The Huskies will enter the third day of competition tomorrow, when the final 18 holes beginning at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start.
