HOWEY IN THE HILLS, Fla. -- The Northern Illinois men’s golf team sits in 15th place after Saturday’s first two rounds of the Mission Inn Spring Spectacular at the Mission Inn Resort Las Colinas course. Senior Kurtis Luedtke (Aurora, Ill./West) leads the Huskies with a two-round total of 150, tied for 31st heading into Sunday’s final round.

Northern Illinois opened the tournament with a 311 before bettering that mark by two strokes with a second round 309 for a two-round total of 620. Purdue leads the tournament with a 36-hole total of 577; Indiana’s Michael M’Gee and Georgia State’s J.J. Grey hold the individual lead, each shooting 141 in the opening two rounds.

“We struggled driving the ball today,” said NIU head coach Tom Porten. “The golf course has five or six holes where there is no bailout, there is trouble left, trouble right, you have to put your ball in play, and we didn’t go a great job of that today.

“We are only 11 strokes out of ninth-place so we have an opportunity tomorrow to salvage something out of this trip. The guys are frustrated, not pleased with today but tomorrow is another day.”

Luedtke opened the tournament with a morning round 76 before coming back with an afternoon 74 to sit just outside the top-30. Luedtke carded six birdies in the opening day of play and is tied for the seventh-best par five score at three-under par.

Senior Bryce Emory (Aurora, Ill./Marmion Academy) and sophomore Nick Schiavi (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) each opened with 36-hole totals of 156. Emory fired a first round 79 before coming back with a 77 in the afternoon round; Schiavi reversed those scores with a morning 77 and a second round 79.

Playing as an individual, freshman Connor Nelson (Roscoe, Ill./Hononegah), is a stroke back of Emory and Schiavi with a 36-hole total of 157. Redshirt senior Griffin Bauman (Crystal Lake, Ill./Central) carded a two-round total of 160 and junior Shawn Foley (Pewaukee, Wis./Waukesha North) recorded a 36-hole total of 161.

NIU will return to action on tomorrow morning in the final round of the Mission Inn Spring Spectacular, the Huskies will then travel back to Florida on Friday, March 29, to begin the FAU Spring Break Invitational.
