NAPLES, Fla. – The Northern Illinois University men’s golf team sits in a tie for 10th-place with Indiana University after Sunday’s opening two rounds of the Talis Park Challenge at Talis Park Golf Club. The Huskies fired a two-round total of 617 to open the tournament and are just six strokes out of the top-seven heading into Monday’s final round.

“Talis Park is as challenging of a golf course as we have ever seen,” said NIU head coach Tom Porten. “The course is in perfect condition, but the greens are very fast and we had 30-mile per hour winds this afternoon. It made for a real challenge for our guys, but up until the end of the round we were playing pretty well, then almost everyone gave back shots right at the end of the round or we might have been around the top-six.

“Overall, it was a step forward. It is a hard golf course and with those conditions you really have to try to grind out pars and I thought, for most of the afternoon, we did a pretty good job of that.”

Junior Liam White (Waukegan, Ill./Carmel Catholic/Indian Hills CC) led the Huskies in Sunday’s first two round, carding an opening round 75 and a second round 76, he is currently tied for 23rd overall. White carded a pair of birdies in each of his first two rounds of the tournament.

“Liam battled all day long,” said Porten. “I was with him for a good portion of the morning round and he didn’t make a lot of putts, but he kept making pars. He doubled his first hole of the afternoon but was steady most of the rest of the round before three-putting his last hole of the day.”

Freshman Caulen Coe (Gulf Stream, Fla./University of Nebraska Independent School) is just two strokes behind White, tied for 32nd at 153, and freshman Jake Curwin (Faribault, Minn./Shattuck St. Mary’s) is just one more stroke back at 154, tied for 35th.

Vanderbilt leads the team standings with a four under-par total of 572; Charlie Ewing of the Commodores is three under (141) to sit atop the individual leader board.

NIU will be paired with Indiana and Ball State in Monday’s final round, which begins with a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m. CT (8:30 a.m. ET). Live scoring is available via birdiefire.com.
