NAPLES, Fla. -- Junior Liam White (Waukegan, Ill./Carmel Catholic/Indian Hills CC) tied for 25th as the Northern Illinois University men’s golf team finished 12th at the Talis Park Challenge at Talis Park Golf Club. The Huskies shots a final round 324 as a team, finishing with a 54-hole team total of 941.

Vanderbilt claimed the team title by 19 strokes over second-place Wichita State and Vanderbilt’s Carson Jacobs tied with Austin Peay’s Marco Iten for individual medalist honors at one-under par, 215.

“The golf course won today,” said NIU head coach Tom Porten. “We just did not start well as a team, Caulen (Coe), Liam (White) and Jake (Curwin) managed to dig in and fight through the high winds and nasty hole locations, which were as hard as we have ever seen.”

“On the plus side, outside of Liam’s second hole, he played in last 16 holes in two-over par, battling some really high winds. He played a fairly solid tournament and it was good to see him improve as the week went on. Caulen and Jake has some stretches of struggles, like everyone did on a day like today, but they battled through adversity.”

White and freshman Caulen Coe (Gulf Stream, Fla./University of Nebraska Independent School) led the Huskies in the final round, each carding rounds of 78. White’s three-round total of 229 helped his to a tie for 25th overall, his highest finish as a Huskie. Coe totaled 231 for the 54-hole event and placed in a tie for 30th, his best collegiate finish is a three-round tournament.

Freshman Jake Curwin (Faribault, Minn./Shattuck St. Mary’s) finished just one stroke behind White and Coe for the day, recording a final round 79. Curwin tied for 39th overall with a 54-hole total of 233, which is also his best finish in a three-round college event.

NIU will return to action on Monday, April 7, when the Huskies open play in the Redhawk Invitational, hosted by Seattle University, at Chambers Bay Golf Club in University Place, Wash., the site of the 2015 U.S. Open.
