Pinehurst, N.C. -- The Northern Illinois men's golf team struggled in the opening round of the Pinehurst Intercollegiate by Gatorade, as the Huskies fired a first-round 319 (+31) to put them in 17th place out of 18 teams at The Centennial Pinehurst No. 8 [par 72, 7,092 yards] on Sunday.
NIU redshirt freshman Matt Triplett (St. Charles, Ill.) led the charge for the Huskies with a six-over par, 78. Freshman Tim Kay (Bartlett, Ill.) was one stroke behind Triplett with a 79, while classmate Andrew Frame (Manteno, Ill.) carded an 80.
Junior Zach Jecklin (Bloomington, Ill.) entered the clubhouse with an 82, while sophomore Alex Wagner (St. Charles, Ill.) added a 90.
"It was very windy and cold out there today," NIU head men's golf coach John Cleary said. "The wind was swirling, the greens were tough and the flags were in hard places. We lost a lot of shots around the green, but fortunately it was just an 18-hole day and we can make some shots up tomorrow."
