KANNAPOLIS, N.C. -- The Northern Illinois men’s golf team was in a tie for third-place following Saturday’s opening round at the Irish Creek Collegiate but the Huskies could not keep pace in the second 18 holes, finishing the day in 10th position. Junior Kurtis Luedtke (Aurora, Ill./West) is tied for 16th to lead NIU individually, Luedtke posted an even-par 142 for the day.

Kent State leads the team competition at 15-under par, 12 stroke better than second-place Mercer. Xavier’s Sebastian MacLean leads the way individually at eight-under par (134).

“Kurtis (Luedtke) and Thomas (Dunne) really carried us this morning, they both played really well,” said NIU head coach Tom Porten. “During the afternoon round we just lost our patience, we lost our way a little bit and that cost us.”

Luedtke fired an opening round four-under 67, the best opening round of the tournament for the Huskies. Starting on the 14th hole, Luedtke opened with a birdie before reaching four-under by the third hole, his ninth hole of the day. After a double-bogey on number four, Luedtke birdied number five and number eight to get back to four-under. Luedtke followed with a second round 75.

Freshman Thomas Dunne (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) carded a two-under 69 in Saturday’s opening round. Beginning on number 11, Dunne made the turn back to the front nine at one-under before dropping back to even after the second hole. Dunne was back to one-under through eight and a birdie on the par four ninth helped him finish his round at two-under. Dunne shot a 76 in the afternoon round and is currently in a tie for 31st.

Starting on number 13, sophomore Shawn Foley (Pewaukee, Wis./Waukesha North) opened with 15-straight pars, heading to the 10th at even-par but a pair of bogies in his final three holes gave Foley a two-over 73 in Saturday’s first round. In his second round of the day, Foley had a tough start, making the turn to the front nine at three-over. Foley bounced back with birdies on two of the first three holes on the front nine before finishing his second round with another 73.

Junior Griffin Bauman (Crystal Lake, Ill./Central) bounced back from an opening round 77 to card a 73 on the second 18 of the day. Bauman recorded four birdies during the afternoon round of play.

“We start on the back nine tomorrow and we have to see if we can get through that nine. If we do, there are opportunities to score on the front side,” Porten said. “If we can do that we have a chance to make up some spots.”

NIU begins Sunday’s final round at 9:30 a.m. ET as junior Bryce Emory (Aurora, Ill./Marmion Academy) will be first off the tee for the Huskies.
