LAKE WORTH, Fla. – The Northern Illinois men’s golf team carded a final round 305, its second-best round of the weekend, in Sunday’s final round of the Florida Atlantic Spring Break Invitational at the North Course at The Fountains Country Club. Redshirt senior Griffin Bauman (Crystal Lake, Ill./Central) shot a final round 74, tied for the best round of the day for NIU, to finish in a tie for 30th.

“It was more of the same for us today,” said NIU head coach Tom Porten. “The good news is that we had a lot of grind and fight in what were very windy and difficult conditions, as they should be in the final round of a tournament.

“We had three pretty good performances, Connor (Nelson) struggled a little in the middle of the round but helped us with a 77. Kurtis (Luedtke) had a really good round until an unfortunate double-bogey on the 16th. Griffin (Bauman) continued his wizardry with his short game; he only hit six greens in regulation but still shot 74 to lead us.

Bauman moved up three places to 30th with his final round 74, carding 11 pars and two birdies. Senior Kurtis Luedtke (Aurora, Ill./West) tied Bauman for the best round of the day for the Huskies, moving up 17th places into a tie for 56th. Luedtke was two-under par through 11 holes before a pair of back nine double-bogies helped back him up to a 74.

Freshman Connor Nelson (Roscoe, Ill./Hononegah), making his first appearance in the lineup for the Huskies, shot a 77 in the final round to finish with a 54-hole total of 230, tied for 53rd.

Central Florida won the team title with a final round 295, seven strokes better than Hartford and Florida Gulf Coast. Jacksonville State’s Tomasz Anderson carded a final round 68 to finish with a 54-hole total 209 to earn individual medalist honors.

“We are disappointed in our finish but there were lots of positives in our effort and we will keep working and getting better heading into next weekend,” said Porten.

Northern Illinois will return to action on Monday, April 8, when it begins play in the Jim West Intercollegiate in McKinney, Texas.
