Huskies Rebound in Second Round at Marshall Invitational
April 3, 2009
HUNTINGTON, W. Va. - The Northern Illinois men's golf team battled the elements as well as the golf course on the first day of the Marshall Invitational and stand in 13th place after 36 holes at the par 71, 6,484-yard Guyan Golf and Country Club Course in Huntington, W. Va. Tough weather conditions early, including rain and wind that gusted to 30 miles per hour, inflated the morning scores, as no player in the field scored under par and Richmond's 292 led the field. Sophomore Jeff Dick (Sherman, Texas/Sherman HS) posted the best NIU score of the morning with a two-over par 73, but the best the rest of his teammates could do was a pair of seven-over par 78s by Tim Kay (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett HS) and Matt Triplett (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East HS). "Tough conditions made scoring difficult in the morning," said NIU Head Coach John Cleary. "It was gusty and the winds were pretty tough and we didn't handle it particularly well. It definitely got easier in the afternoon and we kept it together and played better." Northern Illinois came back to compile a team score of 298 in the afternoon round and leads 14th place Davidson by four strokes and 15th-place Wright State by nine. The Huskies are three strokes behind Eastern Kentucky and trail 11th-place Marshall by six strokes. Freshman Max Hosking (Madison, Wisc./La Follette HS) led NIU in the afternoon round as he tallied a two-over 73. Marengo's Andrew Frame added a three-over par 74 while Kay shot 75 and Dick 76. Dick leads all Huskie players through two rounds with a total of seven-over par 149 to stand tied for 33rd. Kay and Hosking are tied for 51st at 11-over par 153 and Frame is two strokes behind, tied for 60th.
"I'm confident we'll play better tomorrow and do what we can to maximize our birdies," Cleary said. Illinois leads the team competition by four strokes over Ball State with Xavier third, four strokes behind BSU. DePaul is fourth and Richmond fifth. The Illini's Zach Barlow leads the individual race as he is at two-under par 140, one stroke ahead of Sebastian MacLean of Xavier. The tournament concludes Saturday with a single round.
