Northern Illinois Men's Golfers Wrap Up Rain-Shortened Marshall Invitational
April 5, 2008
HUNTINGTON, W. Va. - The Northern Illinois men's golf team wrapped up its rain-shortened 36-hole competition at the Marshall Invitational Saturday despite muddy course conditions following heavy rains that washed out Friday's play. Greg Bauman (Crystal Lake, Ill./Central) led the Huskie contingent with a final score of 147 (72-75) and finished tied for 38th overall. Bauman's first round score was NIU's low mark of the day. One stroke behind Bauman was teammate Alex Wagner (St. Charles, Ill./East) who posted a 148 (75-73) and placed in a tie for 47th. Senior Joe Mills (Morrison, Ill./Morrison) competed in his first collegiate event and finished at 150 after identical scores of 75 in each round. Tim Kay (151) and Kyle Martin (161) rounded out the Huskie competitors. "Greg [Bauman] played well to lead us today and he drew on his experience from having played this course before," said assistant coach Derek Sisko, who guided the Huskies at Marshall. "Alex [Wagner] and Tim [Kay] also played well and contributed for us and Joe [Mills] stepped in well and had a big day in his first college tournament. Overall, conditions were tough because the course was wet and muddy and the weather was cold and rainy." As a team, NIU finished ahead of host Marshall with a score of 596 (298-298) and in a tie for 15th. Northern Illinois is fielding "split squads" with part of its team playing at Marshall and a group led by Zach Jecklin (Bloomington, Ill./Bloomington) and Andrew Frame (Manteno, Ill./Manteno) in California for the Stevenson Ranch Invitational on Monday and Tuesday. -NIU-
