Huntington, W. Va. - Northern Illinois freshman Greg Bauman (Crystal Lake, Ill.) turned in his most impressive performance to date, as the Crystal Lake, Ill., native fired a second-round 69 (-2) to help the Huskies tie for a fifth-place finish at the 38th Marshall Invitational at the Guyan Golf and Country Club [par 71, 6,446 yards] on Saturday afternoon.
Bauman placed seventh overall with a two-round tally of 142 (73-69).
The final round of the tournament was cancelled due to snowy weather conditions.
NIU junior Zach Jecklin (Bloomington, Ill.) and freshman Andrew Frame (Manteno, Ill.) both placed in the top 10 as they tied for ninth-place overall with a two-round total of 144 (+2). Freshmen Matt Triplett (St. Charles, Ill.) and Tim Kay (Bartlett, Ill.) rounded out the scoring for the Huskies with a 153 (79-74) and 158 (80-78) respectively.
"It's great to get three guys in the top 10," NIU head coach John Cleary said. "It was nice to see Greg [Bauman] get his first top-10 collegiate finish and this should give us a lot of confidence heading into next week."
Penn State, led by medalist Robert Rohanna's 137 (69-68) and runner-up Kevin Foley's 138 (68-70), won the overall tournament with a 565 (285-280). Ball State and Marquette tied for second with a 577, followed by Akron (581), NIU (583), Ohio (583), Richmond (585), William and Mary (586), Eastern Kentucky (587), Marshall (591), Eastern Michigan (592), Bowling Green (595), Cleveland State (595), Miami (596), James Madison (612) and Wright State (616).
Marquette's Mike Van Sickle tied for second with a 138 (68-70), while teammate Michael Bielawski placed fourth overall with a 141 (73-68). Akron's Brad Wright tied Bielawski with a 141 (71-70).
The Huskies will be back in action on Sunday, April 15th, as they will participate in the Wolf Run Intercollegiate, hosted by IUPUI. Tee-times are slated to begin at 8 a.m. [CDT].
