IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The Northern Illinois University men’s golf team sits in 12th place following Saturday’s opening two round of the Hawkeye-Great River Entertainment Invitational at Finkbine Golf Course. Freshman Caulen Coe (Gulf Stream, Fla./University of Nebraska Independent School) leads NIU with a two-round total of 153 heading into Sunday’s final round.

Host Iowa leads the field through Saturday’s opening two rounds with a 36-hole team total of 568, six strokes ahead of second-place Minnesota. Jose Mendez of Minnesota holds the individual lead two-round total of 137, seven-under par, two strokes ahead of Washington State’s Blake Snyder.

“The tale of the tape today was a bad start in the morning, a bit of a recovery and then a tough finish,” said NIU head coach Tom Porten. “We started better in the afternoon; Raphael (Denais) had an eagle late in his round to come back to even-par, but Caulen (Coe) and a bogey and a double in his last two holes to spoil a pretty good round.

“Overall we made some strides today. Raphael recovered from some difficult putting in the morning but really figured it out during the afternoon. We are looking forward to tomorrow as we look to climb over DePaul and Nebraska while also trying to close some gaps on other teams.”

Coe carded a team-best 76 in the morning 18 before turning in a 77 in the afternoon to pace the Huskies, he is tied for 45th overall, one stroke ahead of freshman Jake Curwin (Faribault, Minn./Shattuck St. Mary's) who turned in rounds of 79 and 75. The round of the day for NIU was a second round, even-par 72 from freshman Raphael Denais (Saint-Aventin, France/Lycee Ste Ursule).

Denais collected an eagle on the par-five 11th hole, along with a pair of birdies and 11 pars en route to his even-par round. Junior Liam White (Waukegan, Ill./Carmel Catholic/Indian Hills CC) carded a second round 78, including a pair of eagles on the par-five sixth and 11th holes.
