NIU's 36-hole total of 30-over par 606 puts the Huskies just two strokes behind sixth-place Bowling Green State and six behind No. 5 Toledo. Northern Illinois is also within striking distance of fourth-place Miami, who are at 21-over par 597 and NIU trails Ohio, the third-place team after day one, by 13 strokes. Kent State leads the tournament by six strokes over Eastern Michigan. Northern Illinois came back from a morning round of 306 to shoot 12-over par 300 in the afternoon at the par 72, 6,994-yard course. Freshman Max Hosking (Madison, Wisc./La Follette HS) recorded NIU's best round of the day with a one-over 73 in the second round. "It was rainy in the morning and really windy, it gusted and howled all day," said NIU Head Coach John Cleary. "The last four holes played really hard, especially in the morning, and we started on those holes. A couple of our guys posted some big numbers early and it was hard to climb out of that. We didn't take advantage of the easier holes. We need more low numbers, especially if conditions are more favorable tomorrow." Junior Matt Triplett (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East HS), who came in as the Huskies' number five golfer, leads Northern Illinois after two rounds as he is tied for 23rd at seven over par 151 after shooting rounds of 76 and 75 Thursday. Fellow junior Andrew Frame (Manteno, Ill./Manteno HS) is one stroke back as he carded rounds of 77 and 75. Jeff Dick (Sherman, Texas/Sherman HS) went 76-78 to put himself in a tie for 32nd at 10-over 154. Hosking and Tim Kay (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett HS) are one stroke back, tied for 35th.
A trio of Kent State golfers top the leaderboard, led by John Hahn who shot five under par 139 (71-68). He is five strokes ahead of teammate Mackenzie Hughes. Action resumes at Brickyard Crossing at 7 a.m. (CDT) Friday as Northern Illinois will be paired with Ball State and Akron for the third round.
