SUGAR GROVE, Ill. -- The Northern Illinois men’s golf team opened the season with the first round of the Northern Intercollegiate at Rich Harvest Farms on Friday. Senior Shawn Foley (Pewaukee, Wis./Waukesha North) led the way for NIU in the opening round as the Huskies head into the second round in 15th place.

Houston leads the way in the team competition with a total score of 279; Blair Hamilton of the Cougars is tied for the individual lead with Kentucky’s David Snyder, playing as an individual, with a first round five-under 67.

“It was a beautiful day for golf at Rich Harvest,” said NIU head coach Tom Porten. “We had a great pairing and saw one of the best teams in the country, Houston, do what you have to do at Rich Harvest, which is put your ball in play on every hole, lots of irons and hybrids off the tees. The greens, because of the humidity, weren’t as fast as they have been in the past so you needed to find the places where you could be aggressive with the putter.

“We really struggled, especially our freshmen, off the tee and we dug a hole that we could never climb out of. The nice thing about a three-round tournament is that you have two more rounds to get some traction and turn things around. I fully expect us to come out and play much better golf tomorrow.”

With three rookies in the starting lineup, the veterans led the way for NIU with Foley posting a team-best 79 and junior Nick Huggins (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) following just behind with an 80.

Junior Liam White (Waukegan, Ill./Carmel Catholic/Indian Hills CC) paced the Huskie newcomers with an 82, White finished in the top 20 in pars for the round with 12.

Playing in their first competitive collegiate rounds, freshman Pierrick Fillon (Voreppe, France/Lycee Pierre Beghin) posted an 84 and freshman Jake Curwin (Fairbault, Minn./Shattuck St. Mary’s) carded an 85.

Playing as an individual, freshman Caulen Coe (Gulf Stream, Fla./University of Nebraska Independent School) also got his first taste of collegiate action, finishing with a round of 86.

The Huskies will return to the course at Rich Harvest Farms tomorrow for the second round of the Northern Intercollegiate. Tee times for Saturday’s second round begin at 8 a.m., NIU will be pared with San Diego and Miami (Ohio).
