NORMAL, Ill. -- The Northern Illinois men’s golf team wrapped up the D.A. Weibring Invitational on Sunday with an 11th-place team finish. Despite recording their best team round of the tournament, 300, the Huskies fell one spot from their 10th position heading into Sunday’s final 18 holes.
Illinois won the team title for the second-straight year with an overall score of 852. Luke Guthrie of Illinois carded a final round 68 to claim the individual crown.
“We got off to a slow start and a couple of guys were able to turn it around,” NIU head coach Tom Porten said. “Nick Schiavai started three over but was able to get it back to a one over 73. Bryce Emory was four over after his first nine holes and also came back to shoot a 73.”
Junior Bryce Emory was the highest-finishing Huskie individually; tying for 23rd. Emory’s 73 in his final round was his best 18 of the weekend as he finished with a three round total of 224. Schiavi’s 73 was his best round of the weekend by five strokes. Schiavi finished with a 230, tied for 48th.
Freshman Thomas Dunne recorded a final round 76, finishing in a tie for 38th-place while junior Griffin Bauman recorded a 78 and tied for 40th.
“We learned a valuable lesson that you need to put your ball in play to score. We didn’t do a very good job of that on the first day; we did a little bit better today. It was a very scoreable golf course today. The course was in great shape, the staff at Illinois State did an outstanding job of getting it ready. Now we have a couple of weeks to get back to training before we finish the fall at Georgetown.”
The Huskies will travel to the Georgetown Intercollegiate on Monday, Oct. 17 and Tuesday, Oct. 18.
