ERIN, Wis. -- The Northern Illinois men’s golf team carded an opening round 314 on Sunday at the Erin Hills Intercollegiate. Junior Liam White (Waukegan, Ill./Carmel Catholic/Indian Hills CC) had the low round of the day for the Huskies, recording a first round 75 to pace NIU.
Stanford holds the first round lead in the team competition, opening with a team total of 280, three players, Zach Gaugert of host Marquette, Harry Higgs of SMU and Patrick Rodgers of Stanford, are tied for the individual lead after each posted an opening round 68.
“The story of the day was the putter,” said NIU head coach Tom Porten. “We hit the ball fine, but we were plagued with the inability to convert with the putter. If we were lag putting, we were hitting it to five feet instead of two feet, and then we were missing the five-footers. The ball-striking was very reasonable today but the putting seemed to affect everybody today.
“I don’t want to blame the difficulty of the greens, there is a lot of undulation here at Erin Hills, we weren’t putting from bad positions, we just couldn’t get the ball in the hole with the putter today.”
White had the round of the day for the Huskies, carding a three-over 75, tied for 45th, with a birdie on each nine. White was even through 12 holes before giving back three strokes in the final six holes.
After a slow start, freshman Caulen Coe (Gulf Stream, Fla./University of Nebraska Independent School) had a strong back nine to finish with a 79. Coe was six-over through nine holes but played the back nine in just one-over par to close his round of 79.
Each of the other three Huskies, senior Shawn Foley (Pewaukee, Wis./Waukesha North), and freshmen Pierrick Fillon (Voreppe, France/Lycee Pierre Beghin) and Jake Curwin (Fairbault, Minn./Shattuck St. Mary’s), finished one shot behind Coe.
In Monday’s second round, NIU will again be paired with Oregon State and St. John’s. The first Huskie tee time is scheduled for 11:30 a.m.
