MUNCIE, Ind. -- Sophomore Nick Huggins (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) of the Northern Illinois men’s golf team fired a final round 72, claiming a tie for fifth-place on Tuesday at the Earl Yestingsmeier Individual Invitational at Delaware Country Club. Huggins posted the best finish for the Huskies at the Yestingsmeier Invitational, as an individual event, no team scoring was kept.
“Nick birdied two of his last three holes to finish the second round and that got him going for the rest of the day,” said NIU assistant coach Andrew Frame. “He struggled in his third round a little with his swing, but he found something in the middle of the round to grind out a 72. Overall it was a good tournament for him.”
Second round play was finished early on Tuesday morning and, at the conclusion of 36 holes, a pair of Huskies were in the top-10. Huggins was tied for third with a one-over 141 after finished a second round 74 and senior Matt Gorman (Waunakee, Wis./Waunakee) was tied for seventh, carding a 36-hole total three-over 143, including a second round 68.
Senior Greg Pohlmann (Decatur, Ill./Lakeview/Iowa Western CC) was tied for 14th after two rounds at seven-over, 147, while freshman Connor Nelson (Roscoe, Ill./Hononegh) wrapped up his second round with a total of 158, good for 38th.
In the third round of play, Huggins carded a 72 to finish with a 54-hole total of 213 (+3), just five strokes behind medalist Kyle Perry of Indiana. Huggins’ fifth-place finish was the best of his college career; his previous best was a tie for 32nd at the St. Mary’s Invitational last September.
Gorman carded a final round 77 to finish in a tie for 13th with a three-round total of 220 (+10). Gorman’s 13th-place was his best career finish, bettering a tie for 25th at the Austin Peay Intercollegiate in October of 2009.
Pohlmann also finished with a final round 77, completing a 54-hole total of 224 (+14), tying for 23rd. Nelson, playing in his first collegiate tournament, closed with an 84 to finish with a three-round total of 242.
Northern Illinois will conclude its fall schedule next Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 22-23, when the Huskies travel to Kennesaw, Ga., to compete in the Pinetree Intercollegiate.
