BEALLSVILLE, Md. – Junior Bryce Emory (Aurora, Ill./Marmion Academy) earned a tie for third-place to pace the Northern Illinois men’s golf team on the final day of the Georgetown Intercollegiate. The Huskies moved up one spot in the final round to take seventh in the team competition.
Emory carded a final round 72 to claim the best finish for a Huskie this fall. After starting three-over through four holes, Emory got it back to even before finishing one-over, bogeying the final hole. His third-place finish was also a career-best for the Aurora, Ill. native, bettering his fifth-place last spring at the Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational. Emory tied Xavier’s Sebastian MacLean with a final score of 216, three over par.
“It was a tough trip with Nick Schiavi’s illness leaving us with just four players,” NIU head coach Tom Porten said. “But, led by Bryce Emory, we battled every shot. It was a really solid tournament for Bryce. His wedge play was outstanding and that is something he has been working hard on. He drove the ball pretty well and hit 14 greens today.”
Playing with just four players and therefore counting all four scores, the Huskies posted a final round 301, their best round of the tournament, to finish with an overall score of 907, two strokes better than Navy and William & Mary.
Junior Matt Gorman (Waunakee, Wis./Waunakee) fired a final round 75 to finish with a 226 and a 27th-place finish.
“Matt’s course management skills have improved a lot,” Porten said. “He has gotten better at managing his misses and his short game has improved immensely.”
Both Emory and Gorman found success on the par fives during the tournament, each finishing three-under on the long holes, tied for the fifth-best par five scores in the field. As a team, the Huskies were even par on the par fives, fourth-best in the tournament. Emory also carded 36 total pars, tied for the seventh-most in the field.
Junior Kurtis Luedtke (Aurora, Ill./West) carded a 76 in Tuesday’s final round to move up eight spots into a tie for 42nd and freshman Thomas Dunne (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) shot a final round 78.
“We improved our position in each round and I have to give the guys some credit,” Porten said. “It is a unique situation to play with only four players and I was pleased with the effort and the discipline all the way through the tournament.”
The Georgetown Intercollegiate concludes the fall season for the NIU men’s golf team. The Huskies will begin the spring season at the Mid-American Conference Match Play in Lake Jovita, Fla. The two-day event will take place on Monday, Feb. 13 and Tuesday, Feb. 14.
