Day One Results
KENNESAW, Ga. - The Northern Illinois men's golf team finished Monday's opening 36 holes of the Pinetree Intercollegiate in 10th place. The Huskies posted a team score of 310 in the morning 18 before carding a combined total of 315 in the afternoon round at Pinetree Country Club.
Host Kennesaw State leads the team competition with a five-under total of 571. Kennesaw State's Jimmy Beck is the individual leader through 36 holes with a seven-under 137.
After recording an opening round 79, sophomore Nick Huggins (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) came back with a second round one-over 73, the best round of the day for NIU, to lead the Huskies with a two-round total of 152. Huggins is currently tied for 30th overall.
"Nick Huggins played fantastic (in the afternoon)," said NIU head coach Tom Porten. "He had one tough break on his second-to-last hole, making a double (bogey), otherwise he would have been under par. Nick was five-over in his first nine holes, and played the last 27 holes in a couple over par. He was very consistent, but you need four guys to be consistent to play good team golf."
Senior Griffin Bauman (Crystal Lake, Ill./Central) and junior Shawn Foley (Pewaukee, Wis./Waukesha North) are tied for 50th for NIU through Monday's 36 holes. Bauman carded an opening round 78, followed by a 79 in the second round. FOLEY began the day with a 77 before finishing with an 80 in his second round.
Senior Bryce Emory (Aurora, Ill./Marmion Academy) carded the best opening round for NIU firing a four-over 76 during the morning 18 holes to tie for 22nd after the first round. In the afternoon Emory posted an 85 and is currently tied for 62nd. Sophomore Nick Schiavi (Barrlington, Ill./Barrington) is one stroke behind Emory with a two-round total of 162, tied for 65th after the opening two rounds.
"The golf course won today," said Porten. "We played okay this morning until the close of the round. I thought we could finish around 300-305. Bryce Emory got off to a really good start; he was one-under through his first 13 or 14 holes but played his last four holes in five-over. Griffin (Bauman) played his last four in three-over. Those things sunk us a bit in the morning.
"The greens here are very challenging and they continued to get faster as the day went on. We had a perfect day to play, we just didn't execute on or around the greens."
Northern Illinois will conclude its fall season tomorrow (Oct. 23) with the final round of the Pinetree Intercollegiate. The Huskies will be paired with Gardner-Webb and Marquette in the tournament's third round beginning with Schiavi at 9:23 a.m. ET through to Huggins at 9:59 a.m. ET.
