BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Northern Illinois men's golf team opens its 2009 spring campaign this weekend when they travel to the Sunshine State to compete in the FAU Spring Break Championship at Gleneagles Country Club in Delray Beach, Fla. The 14-team tournament will be held Friday through Sunday with 18 holes scheduled each day.
In addition to Northern Illinois and league foe Eastern Michigan, the field includes a strong Midwest contingent with Northwestern, Notre Dame, Illinois, Marquette, Wisconsin and Iowa as well as Missouri, Ohio State, Memphis, Michigan, St. John's and host Florida Atlantic. Three top 50 teams - No. 7 Illinois, No. 40 Michigan and No. 46 Iowa - as well as six of the nation's top 50 individuals will compete for the championship.
NIU Head Coach John Cleary will send out the quintet of Andrew Frame (Manteno, Ill./Manteno HS), Jeff Dick (Sherman, Texas/Sherman HS), Tim Kay (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett HS), Alex Wagner (St. Charles, Ill./East HS) and Matt Triplett (St. Charles, Ill./East HS) in the spring's first action, with Frame anchoring the Huskie line-up.
"We are definitely excited to get back into tournament play," Cleary said. "The guys should be confident going in. We played a lot of golf over spring break. This is a good tournament with a really strong field and it will be nice to see how we stack up right away."
A junior, Frame competed in four tournaments for the Huskies in the fall and compiled a 75.1 stroke average, tops among this fivesome. He led NIU at both the Nebraska Invitational and the UTA Invitational in the fall.
"Everyone seems to be playing pretty well," Cleary said. "Andrew, Jeff and Tim have been consistent. Those are the guys we are looking to lead us this spring."
Northern Illinois will be paired with Iowa and Wisconsin for Friday's first round and will tee off beginning at 11:42 am (Central). Click here
